Yes, after you rotate the switch to on, slide it to the right one more stop to turn on the backlight.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but you'll never get full benefit from a complex piece of machinery like the D800 if you don't read the owner's manual or another comprehensive tome on the camera. There are just too many features buried in menus and buttons whose functions aren't apparent for you to find them by 'accident.' Granted, Nikon's OM isn't a real page-turner, but several passes through that, or Darrell's or Thom Hogan's books are really essential to really become acquainted with your new toy. I'm just geeky enough that I actually enjoy it!
