Good morning Nikonians,

Just a very quick note to say that after quite a few months of use, I'm still very excited with my D800 + 24-120 f/4 combo.

Maybe for the purists the lens is not good enough as it's not a 2.8. Maybe... Who am I to say they're wrong ?? But in my opinion and for my day to day use as a walkaround the city and travel/vacation combo it is excellent. The sharpness is good, the weight balance is good, the build quality is good... And the price was excellent to say the least.

So, I'm happy with it...

The 24-120mm f/4G ED IF AF-S VR is an excellent lens.
That you are very happy with it on your D800 is no surprise.

I do have the same lens, but have been wondering if I should try to switch it for 24-70. One part of me says 'yes', another - 'no'.... Haha!

It all depends of your needs !!!! For me, it was important to have a one lens that cover "most" of my needs. The 24-120 met those.

I agree with Scott on this one. I have the 24-70 and the 70-200. These are the 2 lenses I carry most of the time. Am thinking the 24-120 would save some time changing lenses, never seem to have the one I need on the camera.

I've got both of these lenses too...plus the 14-24. The 24-70 is an awfully nice lens...since I'm usually not shooting landscapes though, with the D800 any of my HH technique shortcomings quickly become apparent. I also find that with the bigger filesizes I'm deleting more photos than I used to...but I'm also out shooting more so that's OK too.

I'm certainly enjoying mine...making more mistakes, but I'm learning from them too.

It is refreshing to see positive things being said about the D800 and I must say that I am also very pleased with mine. I use my 24-70 quite often however, my 28-300 is my walkaround lens because of it's versatility. Of course it does not produce the IQ of the 24-70 but with the ability to crop as a result of 36mp, I have been able to print large sizes from the 28-300. I have seen good comments on the 24-120 and I thought about it before buying the 28-300. Decided to go for the latter and I don't regret it.

My previous combo for all general use was the D300 and 18-200VR.

I recently bought a D800 and the 24-120 f4 VR. the 24-120 is very much sharper than the 18-200 VR across its entire range and 24 is wider on a FX body than 18 on a DX so I am enjoying that aspect too.

I ran some comparative tests of the 18-200 and 24-120 on the D800 body and compared side to side, images shot with 24-120 are not only sharper but also have better contrast, shadow detail and colour saturation.

f4 at the long end has better subject isolation and the bokeh of this lens is also better than 18-200 so I am finding that the few portraits and candids that I shoot are coming out much better than before. I took a shot last week of a friend while rockclimbing. At a distance of about 5m, when zooming into the photo one can see the fibres in the stitches of his climbing shoes!!

I looked at the 24-70 f2.8 before buying. It is considerably heavier and longer than 24-120. It also does not fit in the Slingshot bag that i normally use. I mostly shoot scenes and landscapes while out hiking so I dont really need the additional brightness or the weight and the choice was fairly easy to make.

Plus you have to factor in the price different between star two... $1000 in your pocket is better than nothing!
