Has any else had this problem.. just got my new D-800 and I loaded a 2GB card into the camera, took some shots and the camera would not play them back?? But the images were on the card and I was able to load them onto the computer.. If I switch to a smaller card, like a 512 or a 256, I can play back the images with no problem. Cards are all fine, all checked out in my D-300. I formatted all cards in the D-800. And, on the Set-up menu, playback folder, "All" is selected. Studied the manual and I cannot come up with a solution... Thanks in advance...

What kind of cards? If you're thinking of using 2GB cards in a D800 you may be in for a rude surprise.

By "what kind of card", I assume that you mean the brand.. Compactflash 2GB, and Efilm by Delkin. Smaller Compactflash cards work just great... Why am I in for a rude surprise?

I just put a 2GB card into my D800, formatted it and the counter shows 25. Not many of these large image files will fit in 2GB. I think that's what the previous poster was talking about.

Not only are the older cards too small, they are also too slow. My 1GB CF cards from my D200 were 80X. The new 16 & 32 GB cards are 700X & 1000X speeds. Probably a bit of overkill, but they work great!

Those old cards could be microdrive cards which haven't been supported forever. Who knows. And yes, using cards that give fewer shots than a roll of film would not be the way I'd want to try and use my new $3k camera. Maybe your needs are different than mine though.

My suggestion, go buy some new Sandisk 16GB cards for $50. Problem solved.

Prices have really come down so a good quality 16gig CF is about the smallest you could use effectively without being highly constrained by lack of storage space. Set your compression to 14 bit lossless compressed to shrink RAW files down to about 42mb each. Natively, uncompressed are 72+mb/image.
Regarding the failure to play back......can you see the embedded jpg of the raw image that camera saves? Or does the it hot show any image on the rear display? I am sure the card is not on the tested and approved list published in the manual by Nikon but I've used a number if newer off brand cards with good success. Being able to format in-camera without errors indicates the cards are addressing correctly, where old microdrive CF would not.
Try another card from the approved list and if the problem still persists maybe your local pro camera store can help you figure it out...one of the best reasons to support local stores in major purchases.

Some commentators even recommend reducing to 12bit compressed if space is tight. On my Lexar 16GB x1000 card with 14bit it achieves 200 images, with 12bit it achieves 259! Further, some say that the gains made by having 14bit against 12bit will only show up in a few instances, for example in the deepest shadows.

I must admit gaining 59 images for little or no loss of resolution is a very attractive option especially if card space is at a minimum. I have a 4 Lexar 16Gb x1000 cards, but use 12bit, until I find an issue that would make me select 14bit

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions... am going to buy some new approved cards today and see what happens. Have a wedding to shoot today and might just rely on my old D-300 for most of the shots..
BTW... did a shoot in a gym yesterday with my D-800 at ISO 4000 and the images were amazing... no noise was apparent... can't wait for the winter sports season to kick in...
