"Have you dared to try the 24mm PC on your D800?"

Colorado Sprinngs, US

Has anyone tried to use a 24mm Tilt Shift lens on their D800 yet? It doesn't look like it should do any damage, but I don't know. I mounted mine and had to turn it so that the shift knob (the tall one) was farthest away so that the lens could be mounted.

The shift knob is too tall to fit under the flash.

You can always rotate the lens 180 degrees and put the knob on the bottom...

Yes, I rotated it so that it would mount. Is that the only known issue?

I use my 24mm PC lens on my D700 all the time. There is a conflict with the flash head, but it's workable. I'm hoping the D800 will accommodate it the same way. The size change is not great.

I had modified my lens so shift and tilt now go into the same direction, makes much more sense. And also it helps with the body mounting, as all the controls are on either side now.

No, I did. It's easy, you just need the right screwdriver (Phillips #000)

Tom,

That is really good to know! I'm really interested in that lens. Now, I'll just have to start saving for it. It should be great for landscape photos with the D800/E, since it will produce plenty of DOF without the diffraction worries.

There used to be a 'How To' here http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1030&message=39865204&changemode=1 but the link (1st post) isn't working now.

Here's one for a Canon t/s - I suspect it's much the same http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/modify_canon_tilt-shift.html.

What direction did you rotate the back-plate, CW or CCW? When hold my lens with the aperture "L" facing me, a CW rotation of the plate would locate both the adjusting knobs on one side and the locking knobs on the other side. I have read that modifying the 24mm PC requires a ribbon change. Did you have to make any ribbon modifications?

Hi
As far as I know, the 24 mm does not need any ribbon change whereas the 45 and 85 mm do need i t.
As I did not dare do the modification by myself,, I did send my 24 and 85 mm to Nikon Meleville for the Modification and they did a great job (us $ 150 each, including tax and shipping back).
Hope it helps

You just unscrew the 4 outermost screws on the barrel, lift up the mount half an inch and rotate it by 90 degrees. It needs to be rotated so both shift and tilt nobs end up on one side, and both lock screws and up on the opposite side. Then screw the mount back in.

The resulting orientation makes more sense for landscapes. I can now tilt the focus plane forward to achieve sharpness from near to far, and in addition shift the lens up and down so the horizon does not end up in the dead center.

The cable ribbon is long enough, so no extra parts are needed. With the 45 PCE and 85 PCE, a longer ribbon is needed which Nikon does not sell, so these lenses require a trip to Nikon. In any case, for anybody attempting this, use a high quality screw driver with the correct fit, so not to strip a screw. They are pretty tight.

As a side note, the 24 PCE looks to give great results on the D800. The large image circle sure helps with superb sharpness down into the extreme corners, even on the 36MP sensor.

Thanks Tom,

I was able to make the change, but on careful observation I noted that when I did a far tilt, one of the ribbons became very tight. I have returned my 24 PCE back to the original configuration. It would appear that my lens (# 201283) has a short ribbon. I guess Nikon will get a bit more of my money.

Regards

Marc

Is that photo hand held?

Also Nikon warns do NOT try to modify the 85mm PC-E. It requires a replacement, longer internal cable. I do not know about the other two PC-E's.

Hi,

With all this talk of moire, I find myself looking for it everywhere. I think I see it in/on the rooftop of the central building. I hope not, because that means that the D800 is showing the moire patterns too. Maybe the AA filter is rather weak on the D800? So weak that it shows moire, similar to the D800E?
