"My turn, D800e camera failure...."

Encino, US

So I was shooting Halloween Party yesterday with external flash and at some point I got 90% white shot with 10% on top of the frame good exposure. It was in the middle of the party and my heart sank at that moment. It was the best party I have ever seen.
So I tried the usual tricks like powering down and all that. Nothing would help. Top LCD reads ERR. After fiddling around for a while I clicked the shutter again and again and I heard a click but no picture was taken. And camera started working again like nothing happened.

Wondering if it is an early sign of shutter failure.
I will definitely drive to Nikon for a check up.

Or dirty lens contacts, perhaps?

Dirty lens contacts would not produce partial shutter photo.
Camera would not take picture at all.
Happened to me few times.

This is not going to be much help, but I have had essentially the same thing happen although I was never able to see any part of the picture. I take the picture, look at the LCD, it is black. I look at the top LCD, and it say ERR. I switch it off and on and it still says ERR. I push the shutter again and hear a click, no picture is taken but the top LCD returns to normal.

The only thing that I "think" I have observed, is that it has only occured when shooting with a DX lens or once shooting with a Tamron FX lens.

Good luck, let us know what happens.

The reason mine looks mostly white is because I was using the flash.
It sounds like upper shutter has opened but the lower shutter did not follow because it got stuck.

I may be off in left field, but are you using the Auto FP High-Speed Sync (manual page 299)? It's my understanding that in this situation the flash actually fire multiple time to cover the whole scene as the shutter opens and closes. But now that I think about it I believe that if the flash was not firing you would have at least one properly exposed section and the rest would be black, not white... Of course you were shooting fine for a long time prior to the problem. Head scratcher...

Remember that what we see as the top of the resulting image is avctually captured at the bottom of the sensor.

I would check my card and the possibility that you are shooting in focus priority instead of shutter priority.

I am shooting in focus priority. How does it effect the shutter?
And this is the only one time out of almost 14K I shot in focus priority with at least half with the 910 flash.

True,
The actual photo is in portrait mode with the narrow good band about 20% not 10%. The rest is pure white.

When I first got my D800 it was in focus priority.
The shutter sorta half way worked.
Try shutter priority

Could be that the flash combination is effecting the camera as well.

Just guessing, but trying to be helpful as many Nikonians have helped me.

Also, if you get the right tech on the line, Nikon can sometimes sort it out for you.

I will be calling tech soon.
Thank you for the idea but I don't want to be in shutter priority since I mostly shoot in very low light and I need as many keepers as possible.
