Got my D800 from Grays of Westminster 2 weeks ago - Thanks for all your help and patience Tabatha !!

The magnificent David Ford at Edinburgh in very poor lighting
70 200 VR11

200 mm, ISO 3200, f4, 1/50 sec, HANDHELD VR on, -2.67 EV

Original jpeg straight from camera - no post processing apart from downsizing for this site.

Composition is not ideal as I was restricted to my seating position.

As you can see the potential is unbelievable !

Look at the microphone mesh and the lettering on the mic cable !!




Look at the arrows on the white plaque background




I just love this camera - I sold a D700 and D7000 to fund this purchase and I have definitely made the right decision

How can I stop myself from writing this ad copy when I start talking about the Nikon D800? It is a superlative example of the progression of digital technology. How's that?

You're the pro here, but I gotta agree with you. This is a real dream to play with and the results are not great, they're spectacular!!!!

I NEVER got images this good with 35mm film, not even Kodachrome. This is approaching medium format imaging in my book.

I think my is fantastic too, thanks for sharing.

I think my D800 is fantastic too. The detail is incredible! I also like having video capability too. I just started a blog and have written 4 short articles about my experiences to date. I made a short iMovie trailer of some clips I took last weekend at the Music City Marathon. I also posted some stills that I thought came out great.

What a wonderful camera!

Sounds like my D300 will be chop liver whenever my D800 arrives. I was planning on keeping the D300 as a backup body...maybe not .

You would have to raise the topic of selling a D700 and D7000 to fund the purchase - I just so happen to have one of each burning a hole in my pocket as it were

I plan to wait until 2013 but seeing everyone's thought and impressions isn't making it any easier!

Steve, if you did not have a D4, I would say "run don't walk" to get a D800.

Everyone on this forum and several others are ecstatic about the camera and posting wonderful images but a lot of people are reading and depending on other forums are are forming other opinions. A casual scan of DPR, as expected is filled with complaints, demands for recalls, AF problems, faulty design etc. They are in an alternative universe.
Now they are saying both the D800 and D4 are buggy and lock up all the time. That is in addition to the AF problems, back focus, left side FPs, exploding batteries and a bunch of other claims. Sounds like the same bashing that D7000 went through and to a lesser extent, the D90.
It all sounds like the same unreasonableness as in the political forums...pure craziness and sure makes me glad I do not live here any more. I suppose the topic could be anything and the same sort of wild claims and lack of benefit of doubt dominating.
Personally, I will be thrilled if and when I get one.

Stan, I also find the DPR behaviour incredible - escalating gang/crowd frenzy.

What other forums have you read that seemed more reasonable and positive? I need to stop reading DPR.

You know Roger I'm sorta surprised Steve hasn't caved yet and bought the D800. No way he makes it to 2013 I'm guessing the D4 isn't chopped liver and he's having a good time with that.

I would have one instead of the D800 if it wasn't so heavy and expensive.

As much as I love the technology and am dying to try it out, $6,000 is just too much cash for me to spend this year. My excuse is that I am waiting for a new pro-DX body for birding but when I look at that dynamic range on the D800 I am afraid that FX may be in my future . . .

But yes, it's the D4 that is a lot to digest for this year. Plus from a shooting perspective I like to get to know each new piece of kit and shoot it a lot for a while and really get to know it. With no D400 on the horizon, I've got 6 months to really get to know my D4. Then later I can circle back and try out this D800/800E question!
