Does the D800 require the date / time zone to be set when its turned on for the first time ? My D7000 did but the the D800 did not ...

Similar experience. My D90 needed these setting, but my D800 didn't. I must admit I was so keen to get it up and running that I didn't notice this until later on, when it dawned on me that I hadn't needed to set the time or date.

You D800 may have been used as demo or a Quality Control model. Have you checked your shutter actuation count?

So it will ask for the date to be set ? The date was set to be Feb 2012 when I received the camera ...

If the date has not been set, then yes there should be a prompt or flashing "clock". See pages 26-28 of your camera's user manual.

If the camera has been demoed or used for QC then the setup would have been preformed and unless the camera was reset, those settings would remain in effect. If the shutter was actuated, even in the demo mode, for cleaning, or using LiveView the shutter actuation count will be advanced. Resetting the camera does not always reset this count. This count is also different from the image count which rolls over after 9999 the shutter count is a 32 bit unsigned integer and should be good for recording over 4,000,000 actuations.

The reason I'm asking is that the retailer promised me I would receive a model from a "new batch" with all AF problems eliminated, yet I have a camera which arrived with a Feb 2012 date set ... I'm wondering if they have been less than honest with me. I've already put a number of actuations on the camera since I didn't think to check when I received it. Is there any way to find out the manufacturing date ?

It's not a problem to go back and change the date and time if needed. It's just a menu setting.

My D800 did not prompt me to set the time and date before it could be used, nor I would not expect a pro level camera to do that kind of user hand holding. My guess is that consumer level cameras are a different animal with a different feature set, hence the difference with this.
