"D-800 Sports setting.."

Aurora, US

Am new to the forum... have just purchased my new D-800. Has not arrived yet... I am an experienced professional photographer and I was wondering how to navigate this forum to find the best settings for sports photography, both indoor and out.. have used a D-300 for years, loved it but it is showing its age..

Wondering what are the best settings for focus points? Should I use AF or AF continuing focus.. have a little ADD and I find it difficult to read manuals so I was hoping that someone had the correct setting right off the bat.. shots lots of HS football, soccer, volleyball and winter sports season is coming up..

Use a 300 2.8 for most outdoor sports and a 85 1.8 for indoor..

Thanks in advance and hope to become a participating member soon..

Greg

Hi Greg,

I receontly upgraded from D300 to D800. For HS Sports I typically start with the following settings:

SS: 1/500 or 1/640
AF-C
Dynamic 9 or 21 point
Center weighted Metering - 15mm
ISO I either set based on lighting (using histogram) or set to Auto ISO
WB: Auto for Football, Pre-Set for BBall
Continuous High
Image Quality: RAW
Active D-Lighting: Normal
AF-C: Focus (Back Button focuser)
Focus Tracking: Off
AF Activation: AF Only
# of focus points: 11

Lenses 70-200/2.8 for football 85/1.8 or 50/1.5 for bball

I'd say just start with the settings you had on the D300. That should get you VERY close.
