"Downsizing D800 photos"

Windsor, CA

So I know how to downsize a photo but I have this question - Everybody on the net is talking about downsizing a D800 photo to a D3s or D700 12mp photo but just how do you re-size it to a 12MP photo ? How do you know what the MP is after you downsized it ?

Hi Jacques, You bring the picture into Photoshop, Lightroom, or what have you, go into "Image Size," or its equivalent, make sure the resample and constrain proportions boxes are checked, select a resampling method (usually Bicubic Sharper or Bicubic Automatic in Photoshop) and make the long dimension 4256 pixels. If you haven't cropped at that point, the result will be 12 mp.

15Mp in DX crop mode.

The OP was asking about resizing the full frame to 1 Mp. That's different than cropping to 12Mp

A couple of things I’d like to add.

Lightroom doesn’t have an internal “image size” or equivalent command. This is because all edits in Lightroom are non-destructive (100% undoable), and there’s no way to resize an image non-destructively. You find a resize feature under “Export”, in which you can export the image out of Lightroom with user-specified pixel dimensions. You can set both dimensions to 4256 pixels (or thereabouts), LR will resize the long edge to that dimension and the short edge to 2/3 of that. If you wish, you can Import the resized image back to LR.

In earlier versions of Photoshop, it was necessary to select a re-sampling algorithm, although Photoshop showed which algorithm was best for reductions, which was best for enlargements, and so on. Now, if you choose Auto, Photoshop selects the best algorithm.

Regards, Antero
