Coming from a D7000 I have a plethora of SD cards from various makers. Some of my cards, notably a 16gb SDHC Lexar card, will not work in the D800 unless I apply a small amount of pressure to it, It appears the card does not engage the contacts in the camera. Another card I am experiencing problems with is a Sandisk 8GB SDHC - this shows a "Card Error" on the screen saying the card may be damaged - but it works fine with my D7000. My other Sandisk 8GB SDHC works without problems. I have formatted the cards and like I say, they all work fine in my older camera.

The new 64GB Sandisk SDXC card (95 MB/Sec) that I bought with the camera works flawlessly.

Firmware is up to date a) 1.00, B) 1.01

I have found the D800 to be much more particular about CF cards than my D300 was. I bought a new Kingston 32G CFcard that didn't work in the camera (gave an error message).

You're not alone in this. Lots of other people have reported problems like this. It seems that the new Pro cards from Sandisk work without a problem. My Sandisk Extreme cards work fine as well. If you do a search you should be able to find an older thread on this with lots of information.

There is a section in the manual (Page 434) that lists the tested and approved SD and CF cards. Outside of not using a brand that is not on their list, as far as I can tell the minimum requirement is class 6 and above write speeds.

I have been using a Promaster 4G standard Class 10 with mine for the past month and I have not had trouble with it or have seen the Card Error message you report. You may have a defective memory card that is a problem with the 800, but does not bother the other camera.

I have just picked up some 8G Sandisk Ultra SDHC Class 10 30MB 200X cards to try. These were on sale for a good price, so I thought it would be good to have a few in the bag for longer shooting sessions.

I installed the first one in the camera and as far as I can tell it is working properly. Even though the camera accepted it right from the package, I used the camera format as well prior to use. I hope to do some test shooting today with it.

I would think that you should get great performance out of the SDXC card, which appears to be on Nikon's approved list.

I would be very interested in what the difference is in performance of the SDHC cards (class 10) to the new SDXC in real world shooting of photographs, not video.

For me, I would think that even if the card is a bit slower, but works reliably and the camera buffer is deep enough for my shooting style, I am probably ok with it.

I had problems with olde Delkin cards which gave error messages sent them back to delkin which they replaced

Most of my card errors follow car trips. Removing and replacing the card clears the error. I assume some internal part is a little out of tolerance and vibration causes contact to be broken. The problem is not limited to one card, but the 64 GB card is worse than smaller cards. I use SanDisk, a recommended brand.

I count it as just another of many glitches with the D800. The D700 wants to take pictures. The D800 wants to fight with the user. Hopefully the D900 (or whatever) will be well behaved again.

I've not experienced anything like that and I take a lot of pictures while travelling in my vehicle. Do your cards feel firmly seated when inserted into the camera?
