I do lots of shooting in hockey/figure skating arenas. Once the unit cools down to the temp in the arena, I can shoot pictures, but I can not use any of the functions or LCD screen. The PLAY, DELETE, MENU and every other button become unresponsive. The only things that continue to work are the shutter, the thumb and index wheels + buttons on top right. Other than that, the camera is working fine.

I'm guessing some kind of electrical short due to cold...like that was much of a stretch on my part.

Any one else ever have this problem?

(PS: It's not the lockup issue I've read over and over again in this forum...my drivers are up to date. Serial is in the 5005xxx range...)

Hi. Nice of you to inquire. Are you having similar issue? While it happened 2-3 times early on when I first acquired my D800, I've now used it a fair bit (some 20-30 hockey games, pro/AHL and amateur)and it has not reoccurred. I'm hoping the issue actually was with the user (me!) and not the camera. I suspect it may be that the battery was so low it was not turning the screen on when asked, nor allowing any of the back side buttons to function. I've also acquired the grip and second battery...so I now never really run on low power....that's why I suspect low power main have actually been the issue (or should I say clueless user was the issue.) I'll post again if the issue arises again.

Aside from batteries dying quickly in cold weather, I've only had one real issue with a Nikon camera in the cold. I was shooting both a D80 and a D50 on a 20F day. After about 90 minutes, the D80 was doing fine while the D50 was shooting every picture about 2 stops over exposed. Turns out either some grease was more viscous or a material in the shutter/mirror mechanism was slightly binding in the cold and allowing the shutter to stay open too long. As soon as the camera warmed up, it started to function normally again.
