"real world help to e or not to e"

Austin, US

I am ready to purchase a D800 or a D800e and could use some sage advice from those that are willing to share. I am a non-pro who likes to shoot lanscapes and I should 2-3 events per year. What are some of the reasons to pick the D800 over the D800e or vis-versa?

thx

Look through this forum and you will find several threads on this subject. IMO, If you are after the ultimate image, use the best Nikon lenses, shoot from a tripod, then the 800E will offer you that touch more of IQ.

One discussion is here - and in that Brian links to three more threads.

In the right situations with the right technique, the E is SLIGHTLY sharper. But realize that the moment you start increasing ISO or if you use suboptimal lenses or technique, you throw that slight advantage right out the window. If moire is of any concern to you (it was to me), don't get the E.

I have the D800E. One reason to choose the D800 over the D800E is related to video. If you have any plans to use the camera for video, moire is extremely difficult to remove so choose the D800.

And of course, the D800 is cheaper.

Thanks everyone. I had looke around for other threads but missed them. I have a mix of High-end Great glass and some just Good glass, I also look forward to experimenting with the video and I only use my tripod for Landscape shots. so I think the D800 is the way to go. thanks for the quick, concise responses.

I think you made the right choice. In the real world, the difference in image quality between these two cameras will be imperceptible in 99% of the time. I recently did a trip to Maine with my D800 and I don't think I would have noticed any difference if I had the D800E. Michael,

Some of the opinions I have read around the web suggest that the D800 is a slightly better choice if you plan to shoot mostly landscapes with top quality lenses with aperture settings of f/8 and smaller. I usually shoot landscapes at this setting and up to f/16. For this reason I am shifting my opinion toward the D800 and not the D800e. Plus I have another camera that I can use for wide open shooting which will dictate that my future D800 will be used almost exclusively for situations where I need maximum DOF.

Another thing to consider is what I call the 'Best Buy TV Effect'. It's easy to see color, contrast and sharpness differences in TVs when they are lined up side by side. But take one home and you just have a sweet looking TV regardless of your choice (and you'll never again see what you're gaining or missing from the other sets that were next to it in the store). If you put images from a D800 and D800E up next to each other, then you may see a very slight difference in sharpness if using top tier glass. But choose either one and look at the images alone at home, and you'll never notice what you're missing or gaining...unless you're gaining moire. So the D800 is what I chose. I've never looked at one of my D800 images and wished I had a D800E. I could certainly imagine looking at an image with moire from a D800E and wishing I had a D800 though.

Having one of each I can’t miss the opportunity to gloat!

Buy the 800E and never wonder if you missed anything or buy the 800 and put the $300 in your pocket.

I appreciate all of the thoughts and feedback. My D800 arrived 4 hours ago so from my point (an my bank account) the D800 the best possible camera for what I plan to use it for(whatever that might be).
