Everybody is waiting and nobody has any idea when the next shipment is coming. Based on prior practice of two week intervals between shipments, there should be fresh batches in US and Europe at this time. Whether your chosen camera store is earmarked to get any cameras during this round is something that presumably only your regional Nikon distributor knows. Bonne chance!

I want to support my local camera store so I put down a deposit and ordered a D800 today. I am number 44 on their waiting list. Just for grins, I also ordered one from Amazon.com. They don't charge your credit card until it ships, so I figured I could cancel if one comes in locally first. Amazon has not given me an estimated ship date yet.

The waiting game begins!

hi, I am just waiting for my pre-order. Not too bad since I just sent off my taxes - so
I can wait a few weeks
Hopefully we will see a big shipment from Nikon the next week or two.

My biggest fear about the number of orders to be filled, and with their production capabilities at an all time low , is that Nikon will deliver many more faulty units. And on a camera as complex as the D800 , you might not notice any problems until months later. I know I am being paranoid ... Anyone else thinking along these lines ?

I try to avoid the first production units of any new technology. Early adopters tend to be the "real" beta testers, and I hate having to send defective units back.

Thanks for your responses guys. I am number 4 at my local store and they have no idea when they will receive their next batch.
Mike. I agree with you. Based on comments from a gentleman working for one of the big distributors, he was candid enough to admit that the green cast appearing on the LCD is very common. He said that about one third were returned due to this problem.

Let's hope for the best.

I got mine last week. Ordered from Samy's on Los Angeles on Feb. 19th. I haven't seen or heard that anyone else has ordered form them. They have 9 stores. Might be worth a try.

On the list I'm on I'm about 20th. I can't believe Nikon haven't got all the units out even though people back ordered months before release date. not good planning on Nikon's behalf if you ask me.

Hope I get mine before my overseas trip. Not hopeful though

One site figured 1 million pre ordered and a 30,000 a month production rate . I hoping
some will cancel the 3 - 4 orders they have out ,once they get their camera . Some will surface on ebay at a higher price .

Well, if those numbers are accurate (1 million pre-orders and a 30,000/month production capacity) then it will take Nikon over 30 months just to fill the preorders alone! Since the "life cycle" of a modern DSLR tends to be about 3 years, the D800 will be reaching its end-of-product-life just as the pre-orders are being filled to completion.

I don't if that's a good think, because Nikon will sell out its entire production run, or a bad thing, because presumably some business will jump to Canon who seems to have the 5DMIII more readily available (maybe I just think that because I see a few ads claiming to have stock and I'm not actually trying to buy one) and if I had a pre-order sitting for >2yrs, I'd probably cancel it and wait for the D900 or whatever is to follow...

In any case, my guess is that while people are waiting more or less patiently for their cameras in the early phase of the shipping release, frustration is going to ramp up if people on pre-order lists have to wait more than two years!

I hope I don't wind up waiting that long for mine.

If Nikon have that many orders then they will source more components and build more production cells. That would be a game-changer that would see them take the lead in full frame 35mm dSLR cameras, and would ultimately result in future full frame bodies being produced in Thailand as well as Japan. What they can't afford to do is source more components and build new production cells for high-end cameras for a launch bubble. They'll be analyzing the figures for some months.

I suspect that the 1,000,000 preorders figure is nonsense speculation made up of guesses multiplied by other guesses without reference to market data.

I also suspect that a large number of actual preorders are from people who have ordered in multiple places in order to try and game the system and either get the camera as quickly as possible or to get many cameras that can be sold for profit while the demand is high and supplies are limited.

Because most retailers are allowing unlimited preorders with no deposit and no penalty for canceling, these preorders actually tell Nikon very little about real demand, so they need to see what happens as they supply several months worth of cameras.

As customers get cameras, they will cancel their preorders elsewhere. Demand for price-gouged cameras with dubious warranties will wane and the parasites who do this will cancel their very many orders and move on to the next release bubble. All this will start to happen as soon as the second shipment this week (NPS orders took the lion's share of the first shipment then Nikon had their end-of year inventory both of which exacerbated the problem) and by the sixth shipment (mid June) the full picture of sustained demand will be understood by Nikon HQ.

Nikon have clearly made a camera that has captured the fancy of a lot more people than they expected, and I expect the D800 to be in short supply for many months. I do not expect people to be waiting six months or more for a camera on pre-order unless they are particularly unlucky or stubborn with choice of dealer. Once the early adopter constipation is removed from the system, market figures suggest that Nikon can easily satisfy demand for as many $3000 cameras as the market wants. If things have changed so much as that's not true any more, they're in a great position and will be making new production cells very soon.

It will end up with the second wave of shipments cutting the backorders by 50 - 70% .
Like others have posted multiple orders for many folk will free up cameras when they cancel .

At this point we are like two blind men describing a Zebra from memory of a radio show .

I just got home from picking up my new D4 from my dealer. I got some "intel" for you D800 Wannabes. Nikon is shipping out hundreds or maybe even thousands of D800's from Los Angeles Thursday (April 19th) to dealers nationwide. I was told to expect my D800 this time next week!

So, there is hope on the horizon!

Now, I am going to go enjoy my D4 for now. Maybe a trip to Ding Darling NWR is in order for this weekend!

That is good news if true, but if it is just hundreds of cameras, it won't even dent the back orders.

Shoot nature with respect and don't trample it or startle its inhabitants.
