I would guess the firmware is installed in the camera body for the support of the lenses, and other functions. I found it interesting that multiple versions of the 1.02 firmware were supplied; the file sizes for the two binary files differed by 6KB. When I tried to upgrade the firmware a second time, the V1 did not recognize the second attempt at the 1.02 modification as necessary; this did not really surprise me. In my past life as a systems guru, I upgraded many machines with firmware (i.e. microcode, "mushware"). Multiple bug fixes were usually incorporated in each numbered release. My puzzlement is over the difference in the two 1.02 firmware releases for file size! Perhaps some wiser geek can enlighten us. Are there any Nikon engineers reading this forum? I did the upgrade to the 10-30 mm first, and then attempted to apply the 30-110 mm patch. I am guessing both fixes are covered by one, or both, patches.
I think that some of the confusion may come from these facts: - The firmware upgrade is installed via the camera - The firmware upgrade actually goes into the lens CPU
So the internals of the firmware, or the version or file size or the order in which they are installed don't really matter. After the installation, each lens will have it's correct 1.02 firmware in it's internal CPU. The camera is used just as a medium to send the upgrade from the SD card to the lens.
I tried doing the firmware update earlier today, and it didn't work. I finally figured out that it does not work if you are using a 64 GB SDXC card. It does work with a 16 GB SDHC card. The 64 GB card works fine with this camera for images or video.
The V1 with all 4 lenses (did you need to ask?). I have a few images with the 10 mm f/2.8 taken indoors without a flash on my photoblog http://david.mathre.com/?p=4002 Waiting on the lens adapter so I can connect it to a telescope. Also looking forward to using the V1 as a light-weight travel kit. I do find it a bit more difficult to use in manual mode.
I'd actually like to see a fisheye, and some other primes made for the Nikon 1 (just so they are smaller). One thing about the 10 mm f/2.8 lens is that it only stops down to f/11. I would have liked it to go to f/22, or at least f/16.
