"F mount macro lenses on 1"

Newton, US

I take closeup pictures of insects and such. The numbers make the J1/V1 look like a good way to get closer-ups using the adapter and an F mount macro lens. The pixels are about half as wide as my DSLR's. Twice the resolution. Maybe.

What looks good by doing math may not look good when the images come out. A lens may not have enough resolution, or the small pixels of the 1 may not be good enough to outresolve the larger pixels of a DSLR.

Has anybody tried near 1:1 macros using the adapter? How good are the results?

Lack of off camera flash will also be a problem. Can you get decent illumination of macro subjects?

I will try it later today and post the results unless someone beats me to it.

To compare, I took two pics using a 105 Micro on a D700 for the first shot.
The second pic was made at the same distance (19-1/4 inches) between the face of the lens and the subject (the tripod mount on a 80-200mm Zoom lens).

I did not use a flash to keep the pics as close to the same as I could.
In both pictures the point of aim and focus is the 1/4-20 threaded hole in the mount.
The pics are reduced in size equally and came straight from the cameras.
With a D700.....

This pic was made with the Micro lens mounted on the V1 with the FT1 adapter......

Thanks. EXIF data says +2/3 exposure compensation for the V1 picture, and it is bright (which could also be because the field of view is full of black). Do you find you have to override exposure a lot?

Can you add a center crop from the V1 picture?

Yes I did have to move the exposure open 2/3 because the first pic was very dark.
I assume that was because the V1 magnification was so much greater that almost nothing but the mount foot was in view.

I have not done much Micro lens shots with the V1 yet, but it seems to really work nice.

Here is a center crop from the V1 pic. Is this what you are asking for?......

I meant a "100% crop", 1 pixel in final image = 1 pixel in original image, i.e. the center 300-600 pixels of the original 10 Mpixel image. A 100% crop shows how much fine resolution is available.

I must admit I do not know how to that kind of crop.
If you can give me instructions, I would be glad to try doing that.

Meanwhile I decided to try using a flash.
The first pic is of a dime at 5 inches away using the Micro 105 on the V1.
I used the SB-N5 Speedlight pointed at the dime.......

The next shot is of the dime at 5 inches away, and with the Micro 105 mounted on the D700 and using two SB 200 lights pointed at the dime. A bit over exposed.....

Good news!
There are a bunch of Nikon 1 Accessories ready to come to market
including a LED lights, and one that mounts on the lens.

I got the V1 and FT1. It does a good job taking extreme closeups.

For comparison, on a DSLR I use a reversed Nikon 20mm f/3.5 AIS lens on 41.5 mm of extension tubes (14 mm PK-12 plus non-AI 27.5 mm). This is very close to 5:1 magnification, or 1.1 microns per pixel on a D300. For less magnification I'll put a Tamron 90mm lens on 56 mm of Kenko extension tubes; this is about 2:1 or 3 microns per pixel.

I put a 50mm Sigma macro lens on 56mm of Kenko extension tubes on an FT1 on a V1. I'm looking at a bright screen through a wide-open lens instead of at a dim screen through a stopped down reversed lens. Effective aperture ~f/8 instead of ~f/40, and the camera will brighten the display. I shot a ruler and the image is 1.6 microns per pixel. Expanded to 100% the image seems at least as sharp as the reversed lens on DSLR.

I put an SB-800 in SU-4 slave mode and used manual flash and camera exposure. I don't think the V1 can command flashes like the DSLRs.
