"V1 lost autofocus with VR 70-300"

CA

I updated to 1.21 firmware now have no autofocus. Checked battery, tested in good light, set to AF-S, nothing. Firmware for L shows 1.0 not 1.1 as before update. I tried to update with VR lens attached but will not change to 1.1.
Please help.
With thanks...

There are no Nikon 1 firmware for the FX lens 70-300.
If you use the FT1 to attach the 70-300 it should be the firmware of FT1 that is reported as 1.00.

Can it be that you used to have the 30-110 lens on before so to simply mixed up the lens and its firmware?

I did change back and forth from 30-110 to 70-300 with FT1 mount. If something got mixed up, any idea on how to fix. Autofocus did work previously.

I've not updated my V1 yet to the new firmware so I can't verify whether that combo will work still for me. Have you tried any other non CX lenses?

No, I don't have anything else. I checked Nikon website and it does say that you need 1.1 This shows up with the 30-110 and the 10-30 but not with the 70-300. I'm sure it was there before the update. I'm kinda new to this stuff, amateur I guess, but it did work, that's why I'm really confused. The only thing i've done different is install the update.

Lets go back to the beginning.

Take off the lens you have on now and put on the 30-110. If you have the 30-110 on now just remove it and put it back on. Do you have AF? Can you take a picture?

If Yes to the above...remove the 30-110 and attach the FT1 then attach the 70-300 to the FT1. Do you have AF now? Is the AF switch on the 70-300 set to AF.... if not switch it on...do you have AF now?

If you have AF with neither...check your camera settings to make sure that you have AF set on to single point. Set face priority AF to off. Test either lens and try to snap a pic. Did it take?

Let us know...

30-110 works fine, no auto with ft adapter lens. It's like it's stuck in MF. I noticed sometimes I had to use the manual focus ring to help a bit. Could I have jammed something inside the lens that is not letting it work.

I assume that you have take a pic with the 30-110 to make sure that your shutter button is completely functional. It sounds to me like something is not making the right contacts in the front end or back end of the FT1. My firmware is 1.2/1.2/1.0 and all AF-S lenses work. Are you sure your 70-300 is the AFS VR version? The older 70-300 won't AF on the FT1 as far as I know. But I thought you said that it did work before the new firmware.

I use the V1 with the FT1 and Nikon 70-300 lens. I have not experienced any auto-focusing problems with two.

Have you tried the 70-300 on another camera, just to make sure it works correctly? Also, what about other F1 mount lens, do they work with the V1?

I did update my firmware.

John

In addition to some of the other things people have mentioned have you doublechecked the camera itself? Sometimes the mode dial gets set to something else when you didn't expect. I have had that happen to me a few times.

I just got back my V1 this morning so when I get home from work I'll see what I can see.

Well, just got back from camera store. In the tech guys own words, "your lens is pooched"
Focus motor done.
Now since my wife bought it for me at Christmas, two months old, never crossed my mind, but you guys were on the right track. Anyway, gave me a new lens and some shooting/camera advice, which I do need, obviously.
I guess it was the perfect storm so to speak, update same time as problem.
Your help was much appreciated..... Keep shootin'

True! Coincidences like that are hard to ignore. Glad you got it fixed up. I've only had one Nikon lens that had a problem, my 105 VR. But Nikon fixed it up and it runs like a champ. Still don't know what caused it.
