"V2 has been delivered - Initial Impressions"

Louisville, US

My knew V2 arrived this morning. My very first impressions, overall, are good. Here is a very simple, very initial Pro / Con review:

Pros
- Handles well. I like the feel of the grip.
- "Image Review" option under the playback menu allows shut off of review after shot
- Actual ISO is displayed in the viewfinder and screen instead of the Auto ISO setting
- On/Off ring around the shutter release button makes for faster/easier power up
- 0bvious, improved placement of mode dial
- Rear command dial instead of the "up/down" button

Cons
- New battery: EN-EL21 (may not be a con for everybody)
- Hopefully a non-issue: the on/off and shutter release button do not seem to be as "solid" as I've come to expect Nikon controls to be. They "wobble" a bit.

How would you rate the pocketability of the V2 with the grip? I was a little disappointed with the battery change. Would have been nice to keep using the same spare batteries!

Can you feel the shutter release/video buttons more easily? I sometimes hit the wrong one on my V1.

I don't usually carry the V1 in pocket but yesterday, I did carry the V2 around in my jacket pocket. The 30-110 lens was mounted. It did fit in the pocket but was a little bulky. Possibly the 10-30 lens would make it less so. The grip didn't seem to be any problem, but the pop up flash housing acted as a bit of an anchor when putting in and taking out of the pocket.
The video button is much better placed IMHO. I don't believe it will be nearly as likely to accidentally press the wrong button.

Excellent news! I am still running CS5 and LR4, so I will probably be shooting JPG until I update my Mac to Mountain Lion. I doubt CS5 and LR4 read V2 Raw files.

Adobe has not updated CS6 Camera Raw or Lightroom 4 to read V2 NEFs yet. Any thoughts on how quickly this may come about?

You can temporarily use View NX2 to view and convert images into a format usable in Lightroom. View NX2 supports the V2.
