"Copyright data"

US

I am a little stumped. After purchasing my D7000, I downloaded Ken Rockwell's recommended settings for U1 and U2. This also loaded his copyright info into my camera. I immediately changed the data to my own. However when I upload photos to a sharing site, his copyright information is listed. Any ideas on this one? The images were definitely taken AFTER changing the data in the camera. Thanks in advance!

Does his information still show up on the screen if you were to go to it now?

You need to over-write it, then scroll down to check the "Attach copyright information", BUT NO NOT CLICK 'OK'.... scroll up to "Done" first.

Thanks for the advice. I have done this several times. When I check the image data in CS5 it shows my info, but when I upload to Phanfare, good ol' Ken Rockwell shows up again as both a caption and in the copyright data. Can't figure out what's up with this.

In the EXIF info viewed via Photoshop, and of course on screen under copyright info on the setup menu.

So KR's managed to add another comment into the camera-generated exif? Wow..... didn't know you could do that.

So basically, you have two copyrights that show up in the metadata? If yours is generated by the original camera software, then that should show up as:

Artist: John Doe
Copyright: 2011 John Doe Photography
Image Comment: What you want this to be.

Is KR's input somewhere else, and titled differently?

You can set that in the camera itself, see shooting data, on page 169 and complete instructions on page 243 of the manual.

Ken warned about that in his notes.

You should be able to load the settings, U1 or U2, change the copyright information, then resave the settings with the new info. Ken hasn't devised some new way to tuck his info in exif data. He just used the camera features to save the settings with his info.

I have done everything I can think of to change the settings. I cannot find Ken's info anywhere on the camera or in the image files, so I am beginning to suspect that somehow the sharing site (Phanfare) seized the data on an upload, and somehow registered it as a preference to be applied to all future uploads. I am checking with them on this. Again, when I look at copyright data on the setup menu, it's all mine. When I upload to a site, Ken's shows up. Weird.

I think I may know what the problem is. Have you checked the "Image Comment" setting in the setup menu (not the copyright information)? In addition to the copyright info, Ken included his contact info in the comment section. I just tried his file. I overwrote the copyright info and then was surprised to see Ken's info when I loaded the picture to Phanfare. Went back and looked at the camera and found Ken hiding in the Image Comment.

Have you checked both the “Copyright Information” setting and the “Image Comment” setting?

Maybe KR entered his info in both of these places.

I just loaded a couple of sample pics to Phanphare. The information is clearly in the Image Comments section of the file. There are two images here of my cat. One with the Ken Rockwell notice and the second one without it after I went back into my camera and found that the information had been loaded in both the Copyright and Image Comment locations. I really do think the mystery is solved.

Had to start this process all over again. Phanfare apparently strips EXIF, except the comments which it extracts. I reloaded Ken's file (which I had deleted) and took the following shot. Nikonians, meet Chloe:

You're not overwriting it. When you're done entering the information, >>>DO NOT<<< CLICK "OK"!!!!!! Scroll up and click OK when the DONE line is highlighted.

You are editing it under the Setup/Copyright Information screen, aren't you?

There's three lines you can control in the exif with the camera: Artist, Copyright Information and Image Comment. Ken's put his name in the Artist and Image Comment fields. You'll need to go to Setup/Image Comment to rewrite that one.

Thanks so much to all of you. You all finally found the magic bullet. Yes, indeed Ken's info was still listed in the Image Comment fields. I did not even know that this feature existed. Since the data was the same as what appeared in the copyright field, it never occurred to me there was another comment input field. Thanks again, and nice looking dogs! Is Sparky part Border Collie? I have two!

Glad the issue is resolved. We're not sure about Sparky's lineage - we rescued him from a shelter. He could be border collie or some other interesting mix, we just know he's a great dog. Thanks.

Those fields don't show up in the Metadata provided in Aperture - not sure why. If you open the files in Photoshop or some other exif reader, you will see them.

Ours have always been rescued too. I am convinced that rescued dogs somehow know they've been given a second chance and are great because of it. He definitely looks like he has some BC in him. Here are two shots of Wrigley enjoying the big snowstorm in February.
