The raw data contained in an NEF is for the most part a direct readout of the sensor and as such is not directly displayable without conversion.

For Photoshop, Adobe uses a tool known as ACR for that process and while in PSE workspace when you command to open an image it should automatically bring up ACR. A problem that sometimes occurs is that raw file formats are proprietary and new camera models will not be supported by older versions of ACR and you will need to download a newer or updated version of ACR.

Adobe only supports current versions of ACR, as such you will not be able to open D7000 NEF’s directly with PSE 7 being that they will not update its older version of ACR and the current version of ACR does not work with it either. So with PSE 7 you then have two choices, either convert the NEF with Nikon’s software (View NX2 is free) and hand off a tiff to PSE 7, or download Adobe’s free DNG converter and change your NEF into a raw DNG file that Adobe PSE 7 can open.

PSE 9 on the other hand uses a current version of ACR and all you might need to do is download the current version of ACR from Adobe’s support web site. You should then be able to open the D7000 NEF directly with PSE 9.

Hope this helps.

3rd party photo editors only apply the White Balance in camera setting and ignore all of the other in camera image option settings. If you want those settings applied before editing the images, you can open the NEF in Nikon View NX 2, included with your camera or down loadable from Nikon, or Nikon capture NX 2 and then saving as a Tiff or directly transferring the in memory image to PhotoShop Elements or other program. You will need to perform a configuration of the program to provide the name and location of the program to transfer the image too.

You will notice that the thumbnail associated with the NEF will appear differently then the NEF, which is best described as dull. This is due to the in camera settings not being applied. Many process the NEFs through Nikon Capture NX 2 or Nikon Capture NX 2 to apply these settings and make other modifications before transferring the images to another program.
