Jason is absolutely correct.
Every Nikon DSLR has an orientation sensor that tells the camera if you are holding it in horizontally or vertically. This is how the camera knows witch image to rotate if you enable “Rotate Tall” (page 200) in the Playback Menu.
The sound can be very faint and many people may not be able to hear it while others can hear it clearly.
This has been a fairly common question in all of the camera forums here over the years.

Bob, as has been mentioned, all Nikon DSLRs have a slight internal sound from the orientation sensor, although I would not describe it as a rattle. What did they say at the store about it? Did you not listen to the replacement camera at the store before bringing it home?
