I have heard same as you. Release date reports seem to be all over the place as opposed to unanimous. This is unusual isn't it, normally the reports of release date tend to be more in agreement?

I am having some second thoughts about D7000, maybe I should wait for the D400 after all? BUT NOT IF THAT IS A WHOLE YEAR AWAY, no way! I also have opposite second thoughts that maybe I should sell the D300 now because I am going to enjoy the D7000 so much! So far, I am unsure of whether there is discernible ISO improvement of ISO 1600 and 3200 on the D7000 sample images as compared to my D300 (my main motivation for snapping up a D7000 at this juncture). I am a bit dubious of the ISO3200 on the D7000 sample images, it does not look as good as D700 (nor should it if one is being realistic).

I still have some lenses to get and for me, getting the D7000 defers getting the next lens for some while. Plus I am now worried how soon the D700 replacement will follow on the D7000 footsteps and that is going to cost me a bundle too. I went from hoping for the D700S/D400 updates in the near term to now hoping they are a good few months away, to give me some breathing room to afford all this. If someone could just tell me

I think the wait or buy now question has been discussed at length in another thread (if you want to call it a discussion). My own reason or selling the D90 is to give myself a break from digitial and shoot with the F100. It's been nice!

As far as the D7000, it is odd that there is not any guidance on the release date, and Nikon's typical flier hasn't been produced. I am looking forward to the unbiased reviews. You can't really rely on the early pre-production reviews that are subsidized by Nikon.

Are you suggesting that the authors of some independent previews, like this one by Simon Stafford are not to be trusted?

I agree that we should wait for formal reviews of production cameras before drawing any conclusions, but that's because a pre-production camera may not be built to the final spec, not because the reviewers are being "bribed" to say it's wonderful.

Brian, that is not what I call a review. He calls it "First Impressions", and it has about as much information as a dpreview "Preview". There is absolutely nothing in it about image and video quality. It is not clear whether he shot with the camera ("the following comments and observations are based on my handling and examination of a pre-production sample of the D7000"), but even if he did he shoot with the camera, either he chose to or was not authorized to post samples or make any comment about potential drawbacks. I am very interested for example in the extent of the rolling shutter effect (jello) and the quality of the video compression.

The only thing I have seen that comes close to a review is Chase Jarvis' blog, which is totally paid for by Nikon, and Chase Jarvis himself says not to rely on it the way you would an unbiased review.

And as you point out these are pre-production cameras, but if Nikon authorized Chase to post samples that is really a non-issue.

One real issue is that there are no RAW converters yet, so everything is based on JPG.

If you have seen any real reviews (unlikely), please let us know.

Btw I enjoyed Simon's article on the video shot with the Canona nd a Wollensack lens.

Exactly. I was not talking about previews. What I said is that you can't totally rely on reviews at this point, because the only one so far is subsidized by Nikon. I did not feel it necessary to point out Chase initially. And it's not that I don't trust him; I think he genuinely likes the camera. It's just that he's not really dissecting it the way an unbiased third-party reviewer would (by his own admission by the way--see his website).

So I am looking forward to unbiased reviews, of which there are none that I'm aware of at this point.

Fair enough. Your earlier post seemed to be denigrating pre-production reviews in general as unreliable.

In fairness to Chase Jarvis, Jarvis' blog was not in any way a review of the D7000 and Nikon essentially paid him, to shoot a few promotional videos - not to review the camera. This is from the blog:

"Reminder, if you’re looking for official specs or 3rd party “testing”, I’m not your guy. I’m an opinionated photographer and a filmmaker, and these are my gut responses. Nikon didn’t review this post and they didn’t tell me what to shoot. They didn’t pay me for a technical analysis. They did pay for me to go out and make pictures and make a short film – and I had a blast doing it. They were cool and generous, and I’m thankful for the opportunity. And the camera rocked."

Hi:

The release date of the D7000 is not looking very pretty. According to Amazon, the release date for the kit (D7000 + 18-105) is around 11/15 (hopefully 2010) :

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0042X9LCO?ie=UTF8&tag=nikorumo-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0042X9LCO

…and for the body only option:

http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-D7000-DX-Format-Digital-Body/dp/B0042X9LC4/ref=pd_cp_p_1

Not even an approximate date.

B&H is taking pre-orders on the D7000 Kit:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=nikon+d7000&N=0&InitialSearch=yes

…but the D7000 body only option, they are not even willing to take our money, just yet: “Temporarily unavailable.”

The good folks at Adorama do not even have a clue and they say so:

http://www.adorama.com/INKD7000.html?kbid=64628

“This item is currently back ordered from the Mfr. We have no estimated time of arrival for this item.”

Roberts:

http://www.robertsimaging.com/search.jsp?searchvalue=d7000

People have actually slipped into a coma waiting for a release date. Therefore, Roberts is going to alert them (bring them out of their stupor) when the D7000 is on the train.

"ALERT ME WHEN AVAILABLE"

I think that I have seen that "Nikon" guy before so I think that if he does not work for Nikon, he does have a lot of inside knowledge. However, the video was posted on 9/17. Maybe at that point they planned on releasing the D700 on 10/31. But who knows now.

A few points from the video: I had not noticed that the file format wrapper is now .mov. Quicktime files are notoriously bad at running smoothly on PC's. I am not sure how well H264 wrapped in .mov work.

I liked being able to see the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO on the LCD when shooting video. But it looked like the shutter speed changed as he moved the camera. Does the D7000 have an AE lock available that now locks down and allows you to set all three exposure settings for a true manually exposed video?

Not to get off topic, but here in Atlanta we have several Apple stores. A shiny new MacBook Pro will look great next to your D7000. Just wait till the Apple event next Wed., probably updated laptops will be announced.

On that note: I just placed my order with Adorama. Here's hoping.

You folks seem to understand the technology. I plan to use iMovie08 on my dual core duo 4Gb iMac for starters. Any issues you forsee?

Hopefully next year that will be quad-core 8Gb if all goes well. Basically some short wildlife clips and the musical numbers (select 5 minute or less clips) from my daughter's college plays. Currently I get by with an ancient Mini-DV tape camcorder; so my sense is I will be miles ahead of that

I will buy a rode stereo video mike; again I should be miles ahead of my old beater Mini-DV.

iMovie will work fine, it has worked fine for me when editing D90 videos. Also, don't let anyone tell you iMovie isn't advanced. It's actually pretty powerful, there are some good guides out there from various places.

Which mic did you get? Ive been looking for a good mic for the d7000. Time for a new thread.

Hitler is upset – really upset – with Nikon. He even said that he should have invaded Canada (for you Steve ) just to get his hands on the D7000:

http://nikonrumors.com/2010/10/14/hitler-is-not-happy-with-the-nikon-d7000-shipment-schedule.aspx

This is good – really good

Best regards,

Best Buy has been selling them off the shelf. A number of people on DPR are posting images and giving impressions.
Only JPGs now of course but the large 100% size posted on a few galleries at H1 look a lot better than the samples at the convention. They sure look like more than 1 stop better than the D90/D300s

Best Buys just updated their site from Oct 31 to November 6th for the second shipment of kits.
Seems that they bought the entire first batch.
I hope they do not have a lock on the second one.

No other vendor has a clue when they will get single bodies or kits.

I was actually wondering about this. I'm thinking about getting the D7000 as a replacement for my D80 but can't seem to find out when I would get it. Anyone know where the best place would be to order a body only? I'm thinking amazon or b&h, but its kind of nerve wrecking to order without knowing when I'm going to get it. Also Its pretty certain we're going to get this before December right?

B&H already has a huge list. You would be better off calling local shops.
The price will probably be the same.
The most recent rumor says that Best Buys will not get all of the next batch + they offer kits only.

I've had mine on order with Amazon for quite awhile now. First they gave me $25 discount because they were not able to deliver it on time; yesterday I got an e-mail from them needing me to approve their holding the order ... they were not sure when they would be able to deliver, but estimates seemed to show sometime after Nov. 24th, most likely mid-December.

Ditto. If mighty Amazon can't get the body only, there is little hope for us mortals. But I'll hang in there.

Amazon has it in stock right now from Samy's Camera? This is for the body only. I just purchased one so we'll see if it goes through, says only 2 is in stock.

I preordered from Adorama on Sept. 28th. The salesman on the phone said Oct.7-15th. Today the service dept. said Nov. 10 maybe. I went to 5 Best Buy and was even willing to buy the kit. Only 1 out of the 5 had even gotten one in which it had already sold. They located one at another store that was probably the display if they still had it. Before they called I asked about 32mb class 10 memory card. Best Buy would have to special order them at close to $400 each. I passed on the whole deal.

My Canadian dealer told me today that Nikon Canada will ship this Friday Oct 29 and that they should have it the following Friday Nov. 5th. I am hoping she was being conservative and that I will have it Wednesday Nov 3 . If it arrives in time I will video my daughters play and if it comes early enough I can attend multiple performances and do some still shooting too. I'm trying to get caught up on umpteen dozen chores so I can shoot the heck out of the camera in the coming weeks.

My order is body only.

I checked my local brick and mortar and they got a bunch in, but all went to pre-sales.

I called a Best Buy, even though their online stock said none, and they had one in. Bought it and used it a little this weekend. I'm rather impressed so far. I'm new to Nikon and just using the kit lens, but I used to shoot canon and even had a lot of L glass.

They are trickling in for sure!

I ordered my D7000 body only from Amazon 9/16 and sent them an email today. My response was expected shipping date by 12/1 and to notify them if I haven't heard from them by then. Sure wish I could find one in stock seeing I sold my D90 in anticipation, might end up cancelling and buying a new D90...

Just to further confirm your expectations: I ordered the D7000 kit on 10/29/10 and they just sent me an email stating the "Estimated arrival date: November 17, 2010".

Looks like they expect a big shipment in a couple of weeks. I can hardly wait.

My baby is in! Woot as they say! I actually pre-ordered my body-only at the end of August nearly three weeks before the official announcement.

Pre-ordered locally here from McBain Camera. They received 40 cameras and had a total of 60-odd pre-orders to fill (so 20 more to go). Their next shipment they are expecting 60 cameras but with word getting out, they expect those to go quickly. I neglected to ask them kits vs. body only breakdown. I was #1 on their list due to ordering it before the cam even existed. No money down, so that is sweet.

Got her programmed while my wife drove me home and just firing off a few test images just now. Looking forward to it!

First lens I mounted is my Sigma 50mm f1.4 and all seems to be OK.

I also bought a separate sound recording device, but I'll start up a separate thread on that. Meanwhile I just loaded two 16 gig cards (class 10/class 6). Also bought the ML-L3 remote and given the high cost of a spare battery, I am favouring getting the grip and running it on 6 rechargeable NiMh AAs (neither grip nor spare battery are available just yet). I bought an aftermarket screen protector that I have used before and will afix that on the weekend.

Hopefully you-all will be similarly receiving good news soon,
Best regards, SteveK

Cool. I had a moment of panic when I mounted my 18-70 on the new D7000 and had no autofocus. Eventually I thought to check the M/A-M switch on the lens....

I still have my ML-L3 from my D70, and it works just fine with the D7000. (Remember that, those of you who think Nikon changes things just to make you buy new accessories!)

I preordered an MB-D11 at B&H. Hope they get them in soon.

I happened to go to Newton, MA today and on a whim called Hunt Camera in Cambridge to see if they had any. They had one kit and I am charging the battery as I type. I am leaving for Florida tommorrow so I won't be doing much testing for a few days. I have to cancel the body and sell the kit lens. I hope Darrell writes fast I need the book.

The camera shop where I chose to get mine only received four (for about 15-18 stores) in their first shipment and they were already pre-ordered. They told me that the second shipment was due this week (11/1) but with this being Thursday and no word yet, I'm beginning to have my doubts.

I was just at the Kenmore Camera Annual Photo Exhibit ( Seattle Wa ) and Nikon had a booth there and they were selling the D7000 along with the rest of the camera's line. Nice and light and seemed to fit well with some nice len's . I know that Ken Rockwell was looking at putting out a review but not sure where is at on timing.

Like every new model it goes through fits and starts to see which end is up and better of the existing models on the runway.

Just received my tracking info from UPS. My D7000 is on the way. Checked with Robert's Imaging web site. They are now showing both Body and Kits in stock. Nice people to deal with, I spoke with Dawn.

Hey, thanks so much for posting about the availability of the D7K at Roberts Imaging. As soon as I saw your post yesterday (11/11) I called them, spoke to Dawn who confirmed there was availability of both the kit and the body only - I wanted just the body only - so I ordered it on the spot! Just a few minutes ago I received the notification from UPS that my D7000 Body was on its way to me. Dawn was very helpful and the service from Roberts was superb - highly recommended!

Thanks so much for the heads up!

Chris

Happy to hear you had success. Dawn is awesome. Obviously, you were not the only one that saw my post... looking at their website tonight, the are sold out of both.

So much for my decision a few weeks ago to concentrate solely on FX!

Thanks again,

Same here. As soon as I saw your message I ordered one from Roberts, and so did a friend of mine. Right after that the web site showed the body out of stock. We both got shipping notification this evening!

I have one on pre-order from B&H which I'll have to cancel. When I spoke to them yesterday morning, they had no idea when they would be getting their shipment from Nikon.

So, thanks for posting about Roberts Imaging!

I ordered mine today from Roberts Imaging as well, thanks to the heads-up here! The body only was shown as out of stock, but they had a few kits left and offered to split one for a body only at the same price, free shipping as well. Scheduled for delivery here Tuesday. I can't wait!

The new camera has been released in Australia - at last !
However, Nikon have decided they can make more money by selling only as the kit with 18-105mm at this stage.

Mine is now winging its way across the country after which I will have an "as new" lens to sell quickly to reduce my Visa card debt..

Really looking forward to testing the camera, though.

Ordered body only from Amazon on Sep 22. Just got notification of estimated arrival date of Nov 16. Looks like they're getting caught up on the preorders. The first batch of bodies only didn't appear to cover even the Sep 15th orders. Unfortunately I'm out of town until the Saturday after I it gets here. Resisting the urge to have my wife ship it to me to play with.

I was notified that my pre-ordered body only was in on 11-4-10. I was on vacation so I picked it up yesterday at my local shop "Split Image Photo" here on Long Island, NY.

Walked into Best Buy and bought my kit off the shelf. Great camera and beautiful pictures right out of the box. NX2 reads its NEF although CS5 or LR3 does not do so yet.

Thanks

Update Adobe Camera Raw.

I'm stick on CS4 and LR2, so nef won't work for me in these tools, I'm a version behind.

Newtonville Camera also has spare batteries for the D7000 (EN-EL15) and the battery grip in stock. They will ship them right away when you call.

I got my 7000 from Amazon yesterday. Today when I was in Mike's Camera in Denver on Colorado Blvd., the salesperson said that they had them for 3 weeks. He said they had both bodies and kits. He said they were selling like hotcakes, and they had sold 5 yesterday and 2 by noon today.

I ordered my d7000 body from Cameramartusa.com by phone on Monday this week and received Friday. With 18-200 lens and $250 kit rebate. Kevin at Cameramart was very cool. They list the body as available now on their website.
