I thought I would piggy back on this topic since I couldn't search the forum for some reason. When I tried to search I got an error message that the page was missing in both Chrome and IE. I have a 50mm 1.4 on my D7000. I just did a test between live view focus and viewfinder focus and, as expected the live view was better. Since I don't really want to shoot in live view I am assuming I need to fine tune the lens correct?

You don't have to use natural light. Just use flash indoors, and on a tripod. The higher shutter speed effectively provided by the flash will help insulate the test from motion effects and the tripod helps with framing errors and (slightly) variable distance.

I must say that I didn't have much luck with the test charts and check bords and similar stuff you print on the paper and then align the camera with the test chart and so on..... First I have done rough test with three botles and a good light. See photos on the link below. The guy did it with batteries. http://www.dyxum.com/dforum/af-micro-adjustment-values_topic68856.html I have done tests from different distances with AF-S and AF-C (focusing through viewfinder on middle bottle) to see, if I have front or back focus. Camera was on a tripod. When I dialed AF fine tune +3, the middle bottle was in focus. This was rough focus adjustment. Then I started to compare AF-S and AF-C with the Live-View and trying to tune AF by a small amounts so focusing through viewfinder was as close as possible to live-view focusing. When I was satisfied with the results I just grabbed the camera and done a few hundred photos, to test, if this works in real life (different objects from different distances, have used AF-S and AF-C). I have done 3 photos of each object with f1.8 and 3 photos with f4. Then I compared the results on the computer.

We have seen a lot of focus targets used for these tests but there are a few requirements for least ambiguous results. The target should be on a flat plane parallel to the focal plane of the sensor. The target should have strong contrasting targets with sharp edges. It should be black and white The light should be a consistent color temperature which rules out incandescent and florescent lighting which vary with each cycle of the AC mains. Daylight or continuous white LED lighting are good choices, flash is good for exposure but not for focusing since it is so short a burst that any focusing correction needed to be performed by the camera will be too late. Using AF-S and turning on the AF Assist Light or using flash and using its infrared patterned light from the SB series of speedlights is ideal. AF-C automatically disables the Assist light. The camera should be on a sturdy tripod and mirror lockup used to reduce mirror vibration. It should be well illuminated(this one is the most commonly missed, leading to incorrect adjustments) The target should fill the view finder(another common mistake that introduces more errors)
Before doing any focus tests, it is essential to determine if Live View is sharply focused which rules out lens optical defects. Stan St Petersburg Russia
