"Just got my D7100!"

Dorval (Montreal), CA

Right out of the box, it worked better than I had anticipated. What a relief!

I was one of those D7000 owners who fretted and fiddled with AF Fine Tune interminably until I got it set up for my three major lenses. I took the D7000 in to Nikon to have the AF checked while it was still on warranty and got it back with a note that there was no improvement they could make. It was taking very sharp photos after being reset to factory settings but I still had to set up the AF Fine Tune again for the different focal lengths of the different zoom lenses I use. So it was finally taking the shots I wanted. And then I tried the video. What an ordeal! Shaky is not the word for it.

I took two courses in the use of the camera and still had misgivings about it. My love of the D7000 stumbled right from the outset. But not so with the D7100!

The D7100 works the way it should giving effortless razor sharp photos and fast operation. Back to 51 AF points like my D300. It is one hot machine. No going back. The European award last week gave recognition where it is due. Nikon hit it out of the park with this one. That Toshiba sensor doesn't need a quick pass filter so the shots are cleanly sharp. What a major step for Nikon to break with Sony on that one! Thanks, Nikon. This is camera I have been waiting for for decades. Now I can retire a happy man...

I love my D7100 too but just found out today that it will not imprint a date and time stamp on top of the image. What a bummer, I take lots of family photos and want to preserve that information in print format. The saving grace is that Capture NX2 supposedly will allow for the date and time imprint on top of an image but I own Photo Shop so buying Capture NX2 seems so redundant.

Cheers

Yes the info is in the MetaData but I take photos for genealogy purposes and want it on the hard prints. I found a couple of options though:

---Better Jpeg $29 (http://www.betterjpeg.com/index.htm) - lossless compression but no RAW.
---Batch Photo Pro $30/$50 (http://www.batchphoto.com/comparison.html) - has raw for twenty dollars more but not lossless
---Easy Batch Photo $20 (https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/12190/easybatchphoto) - Does not support RAW.
---NX Capture??? seems like this does not do what I am really looking for. I want to place date on images, not necessarily print them.

Here's a free solution that works directly in PS via an additional layer, but it might take a little effort up front to get it going......

Thanks for the info,
I have decided to go with BatchPhoto (http://www.batchphoto.com/comparison.html). I tried their software on my Mac and it does a pretty good job. I've decided not to shoot in Raw because I like smaller file sizes so everything should work out.

My wife just loves her D7000, but we needed a second body. We are thrilled with the D7100! Better auto-focus, sharper images, lower weight, more megapixels. My sole complaint is that the viewfinder still does not show you what mode you are shooting in. I know that that info is available on the INFO screen, but at night in poor light, I would like the viewfinder to tell me if I'm shooting in A mode or M mode or whatever, like my D700 and D800 cameras do.

BKT is sometimes underestimated. It comes really handy when you know when and how to use it, or for experimentation purposes even.

I am enjoying my D7100 as well. I also upgraded from a D7000.

The aspects of the D7100 that I appreciate most have nothing do to with the 24mp, low pass filter free sensor. What I most appreciate is the mode lock button (I so needed this!), and that 3.2" LCD screen. That screen is fantastic! To me, that screen alone is worth the upgrade. My 53 year old eyes need all the help they can get, and this screen is a dream come true.

As much as I am loving this D7100, I am also appreciating just how great a camera the D7000 is. If you don't need that screen or mode lock button, I'd be hard pressed to argue the case for an upgrade. I have yet to notice any appreciable difference in image quality. Time will tell, I suppose.

Image quality is better in some respects and not others. The D7000 has cleaner files at base ISO and has enormous capability to push shadows. The D7100 wins when you start pushing into higher ISOs - those smaller pixels give finer grain which looks more appealing. Colour noise is stronger in the D7100 although that's easy to correct in post. D7100 files are more detailed and crop better (obviously). Also, the D7100's AF performance is a significant improvement on the D7000's.

Hello Neil,
i thank you for your comments and congrats to you.I think that you must be having great pics now.
I thank others who are helping me make a decision about that new body.
I was so pleased with the D300, then it was and still is WAoW with the D700.
My D300 getting old...
The D700 is wonderful in low light, and adapts well to my long fingers. Now i can see that the D7100 will be so small like a gadget.
I would also compare the price of the DX camera to the FX like the D800. It's a big gap.
I also fear the 36mpx of the D800.

Excuse me guys,i didnt intend to steal that post and i wonder if it's the right place to help me make a decision.

Anyway i would love reading you soon.
Ned
