"focus point stays on"

New Bedford, US

I have just received my D7100 and am in the process of setting it up. I have noticed the focus point stays visible in the viewfinder when I am in M,A,S and P mode. When in Auto Mode it performs the same as my D300 and D800 ( visible when I press the AF-On button).
Is this normal?

That sounds normal.

Do you use auto-area AF with your D300 & D800?

On the D300 & D800 the focus point should always be visible when the AF area is set to Single Point or Dynamic Area AF.

The focus point will not show, until you initiate focus, if you set Auto-Area AF.

On the D7100 when you choose Auto Mode the AF area is automatically set to Auto-Area AF. If you are in M,A,S or P mode and the AF area is set to Single Point or Dynamic Area AF then the AF point should always be visible.
