the manual says you can run 1 or 2, but i have not read that they have to match. so I'm asking those that have one. do the memory cards have to match? or can one be 4gb and the other 16? does the card type matter? (Standard-Capacity (SDSC), the High-Capacity (SDHC), the eXtended-Capacity (SDXC))?

The cards don't have to match. You can have a 32GB and a 16GB (4GB and 8GB or whatever)in at same time. Or you can use just 1 card. With 7100 and relatively large files you will probably want to have a card with some capacity if you're out capturing images over an extended period.

that's great to know, on the off chance that I have somone asking for copies of the photos I take (birthdays whatever) i can toss in a 4-8 g card, set the camera to dump the jpgs there and keep the Raw files on a larger card. I pop out the throwaway card and not have to worry about photobucket or email limitations.
