"EXIF Data -Focal Length of D7100 verus D7000"

US

Anyone know why the same lens on a D7000 and D7100 results in the EXIF data for D7100 indicates the focal length is 35mm and the 35mm equiv focal length is 35mm while the EXIF data for the D7000 indicates focal length is 35mm and the 35mm equiv focal length is 52mm?

TIA,

Rob

Rob,
It looks like there is either a bug in the D7100 firmware or since the D7100 is so new that the software reading the EXIF data is not up to speed. What program are you getting the EXIF data from? If the program is anything other than Nikon's then that could be the problem. It should say 52mm. However this is really almost a non-issue since it only tells you what the equivalent focal length would be if viewed on a full frame camera. What you could do is see if Nikon's View NX2 that came with the camera reports the same thing.

I was using Apple's Preview. I'll check out NX2 when I have a chance.

View NX2 (latest) notes the lens, the focal length used for the image, but not the equivalent 35 mm. focal length.

PS CS6 notes all 3, and has the 35 mm. equivalent measurement the same as the DX mm measurement.
Should be easily fixed, if someone in the company wants to bother .

Oh, and by the way, Preview and CS 6 show the same values.

I posted about this a few days ago ... I noticed it with Photoshop CS6 the day they released the latest ACR.

Not a big issue really, but would have liked the correct info. Guess we wait for an updated firmware.

Sounds like a firmware bug.

Interesting. I had already noticed something else. I have seen it in a couple places. But, I just went out with my Nikon 35mm f1.8 on my new D7100. I shot one photo "normally" in the standard 1.5x (3/2)crop mode, and then one using the 1.3x crop mode. Actually it calls it the 1.33x (4/3) mode.

Using Panda IEXIF 2, I got:
===============================
Focal Length = 35mm

Digital Zoom Ratio = 1.33x
Focal Length in 35mm Film = 70mm
===============================

That would be 3/2 x 4/3 = a crop factor of 2x.

Curiously in standard DX or 1.5x crop it shows:
===============================
Focal Length = 35mm

Digital Zoom Ratio = 1x
Focal length in 35mm Film = 35mm
===============================

Hi Charlie,

As soon as I read your post, I ran the same test, but using my 17-55 mm. f/2.8 set at 35 mm. with 1 exposure at DX and 1 with the 1.33x crop. Sent to PS CS6, and got the exact same results (35 mm. equivalent focal length = 35 mm. for the 1st setting; 70 mm. for the 2nd).
