"D7100 Buffer Test Updated with Sandisk Extreme Pro UHS-1 95mb/s"
Mon 25-Mar-13 10:44 PM by dm1dave

Batavia, US

Hi All,

Many have asked about buffer capacity. I thought I would share some actual tests using 3 different memory cards I have. These tests were run with camera defaults for all except the image size and FPS (frames per second) on CLS. The test is based on the number of captures before the camera hit the buffer limit and slowed down.

The addition of the SD Xpro UHS-1 was a BIG boost....

Walk.... no Run!!! to get this card if buffer throughput is what you are looking for on your D7100.

Happy Shooting,
Kerry

fantastic works...

But... for know the effective speed of a memory card and our d7100 camera,

you can do this:

with a cronometer, count how many seconds employs to make 50 shot in raw 14 DX at 3-4-5-6 FPS.

since it slows down after a few shots, after the end of buffer the reflex slowdown, and is the SD thats real works!

Thanks for this!

Before getting my Extreme Pro, I was suing a Sandisk Extreme Class 6 card and could immediately tell the difference after popping in the Extreme Pro card.

Not only with the buffer, but viewing images and how quickly the cam would write files to the card. It was almost like adding an SSD to a aging machine.

The difference is that much.

Fellows as the card speed increases above 95mb's and I assume it can and will is the 7100 able to use that increase ? At what point is the max speed it can use ? Be kind , I'm a beginner , coming from an old " bit the dust " , Fuji 6mp bridge .

The maximum theoretical speed for UHS-I is 104 MB/s. 95 MB/s
for Sandisk's raw write performance is pretty much the top we
will see out of UHS-I, UHS-II will allow it to increase
further to 312 MB/s.

FYI: it's UHS-I, not UHS-1 (pet peve of mine :)

That doesn't answer my question . Can the 7100 use part or all the UHS-II speed or will it even take and read & write with the new cards ? I understand what you said about the max speed for the UHS-I cards but , is that the max speed for the 7100 also ?

The D7100 and all other cameras are UHS-I only. UHS-II isn't even finalized as a standard.

To go faster you must move up to Compact Flash which at UDMA 7 can reach 167 MB/s, or XQD at 500 MB/s.

Thank you ! That is a very good answer to my question . 92% of max speed has been reached .

My proposal for the test:

Set the limit to continuos picture at 40 or 50 instead of the default of 100

Chronometer in one hand... And one finger down on the shutter of the d7100...

setting the max to 40 would mean you can change any number higher than 40 in the chart to 40.... What are you trying to test by doing so?

because the question is:

how many seconds it takes to make 50 shots in the conditions of slower, as the raw14 and other situation strongly under the 100 shot

I have buyed the extreme pro card!!!

this is the speed test result:

Samsung Briliand Black SD (declared about 20/20mb)

40 continuos shot at 6fps in "raw 14" on D7100 manual focus Maxium aperture of diafragm and 1/250 of second

about 39 seconds (after 7-8 slowing down)

The same 40 shot with Sandisk Extreme PRO:

about 12,2 seconds!!!!

I have also found the ExtremePro UHS-1 95Mb/s card to make a major difference, to the point that the D7100 buffer is now only a small issue for me. I'm not a birder though so don't need to capture each wing flap. Excellent presentation of results. Great work and very useful.

What would be the difference between San Disk Extreme Pro 80Mb/s vs. San Disk Extreme Pro 95Mb/s? There's a significant difference in price between the 2.

Thanks

Speed - the 95Mb/s car will (in theory) transfer data about 21% faster than the 80Mb/s card, assuming they are not constrained by the interface in the device (i.e. the camera). If you are taking 6MP-16MP photos the 80Mb/s card should be plenty fast enough... If you have the D7100 or similar (24MP) the 80 will still be more than adequate, but the 95 would be a nice to have (but not essential) just to ensure maximum performance...

All depends on how often you shoot rapidly, with multiple shots or use burst mode, etc... With a D90 or similar (lower MP images) 45Mb's 'Extreme Pro' or 'Extreme' cards are usually more than adequate...

HTH

EDIT: P.S. The Camera likely isn't that fast anyway, but a faster card ensures it at least runs at the maximum data transfer speed it's capable of...

Thanks. I have a D7100.

I think I will stay with the 80Mb/s, it's a big difference in price between the 80 and the 95Mb/s.

Very good job on testing the speed on different cards.

I don't know if the same exists about the D7000 ?
