"What does the 1.3x crop factor mean to my DX lens?"

I'm a little confused on what this new crop factor would mean for my Nikon 16-85mm DX VR lens and my 70-300mm VR (non DX).

Will I still get the same image coverage that my D90(1.5x) has with these lenses or will there be a dark area around the center?

The 1.3x crop mode on the D7100 stacks with your existing 1.5x crop of the sensor, so in essence it gives your lenses more reach when you enable it.

It's primary purpose is to give you a faster continuous shooting speed and deeper buffer when your subject is taking up only a small portion of the frame.

The term "reach" can mean different things to different people - it's safer to say that the 1.3x Crop Mode gives you a narrower angle of view

Without the 1.3x crop factor selected, you will be seeing the same field of view as you get from your D90. If you select the 1.3x crop, you are just selecting a smaller rectangular area from the sensor. It would be the same as taking on of your D90 images and masking off the outer portions of the image so you see rectangular area only 77% (1/1.3) of the original length and width centered within the original image.

Not that the field of view is equivalent of a 2x crop from a FX image.

Okay I think I understand this in theory. I will try this on a D7100 in the near future. I'm happy with my current lens collection for travelling.

Thanks!
