"Lost plastic viewfinder cover. How/where to buy replacement"

Aventura, US

I haven't been able to find a store that sells it. I am not sure what the model number is. I found a DK-5 but the D7000 is not listed as one of the compatible cameras. Does anyone know where to buy one? Thanks

The DK-5 is the cover used for the D7000 viewfinder.

Are you sure it is the viewfinder and not the LCD screen in back? It has a 3x4" plastic cover. It clips on and clips off.

Those cost $15, Amazon.com sells all those accessories.

Cover it with you baseball cap, hand, boonie hat, or light block rag.

I carry a micro fiber wash cloth or towel in my kit and it blocks light very effectively.

You may also want to look at the GGS II screen protector. I got one for my D7000 and never looked back. It's clearer and more scratch resistant than the Nikon plastic one. It also seals the LCD better so you won't get as much dust/dirt between the protector and the LCD screen.

They're available at Amazon, but get the GGS II not GGS III if you buy one. The ratings dropped on the GGS III because they tried to include the eye piece.

Just a thought.

I'd endorse Larry's comments re the GGS II.

I used to replace Nikon clip on covers after about 1 year on my D200 as they scratch easily on Zips, buckles, etc, so when I got my D7000 body earlier this year bought the GGS screen.

The GGS is also much clearer for reviewing shots as its clear glass.

The OP is asking about the cover for the little eye hole view finder. This needs to be covered when using the camera's self timer or a remote release. It is needed to prevent additional light entering the pentaprisim housing and confusing the Automatic Exposure sensors. The AE sensors should only be using the light coming through the lens and not any light that comes through the eyepiece.

Keeping track of that tiny viewfinder cover isn't so easy. I also always carry a small microfiber cleaning cloth in my pocket that I can use to do a quick wipe of my lens. I just drape that over the viewfinder. Works great.

I remember my old canon A1 had a small levered shutter that you could close over the viewfinder and it was an integral part so not loseable.
Those were the days.

The professional level Nikon DSLRs such as the D4 and D800 have built-in viewfinder shutters.

Indeed they do, but other Nikon DSLRs regardless of how they are classified, and regardless of there use by pro's or otherwise DO have viewfinders, and lenses, and most of the other pro level gizmos.
The D7000 is in fairness heading that way, all be it not as a full frame.
So why not an integral viewfinder shutter.
I feel its a concept that both Nikon and Canon need to consider.
As said my 1970s A1 had it so why not.
Why go cheap on something that seems fairly basic, if you get my drift.
