"Long Recharge Time on Battery"

Los Angeles, US

Should the EN EL 14 battery require 1:40 to fully refresh from a 53% charge condition?

That seems abnormal to me.

I recharged one of mine yesterday that was at 39% and it took less than 1 hour.

Seems perhaps a bit longer than should be. What does your camera's battery info screen say about this battery?

The battery is new. Thanks to the Nikon recall 6 weeks ago. The Battery status in the Setup Menus reported 53% when I pulled it out of the camera. That's why I charged it.

I guess the capacity for captures is in the hundreds, so long as I don't fiddle with Menus and preferences such as U1& U2. I fiddle a lot. And upload shots to my computer.

I don't foresee taking that many images. But an spare battery costs about $75. I have power tools that fully recharge in a fraction of the time.

OK.

There is an information screen you can bring up that tells you where the battery is in its lifetime (age). What does that tell you? Just curious.

Cheers,
Peter

Ok, thanks. That was what I was curious about.

I haven't paid attention to the recharge time for my batteries so can't offer a comparison.

Let us know if you learn anything more on this.

Many of us are getting 1000 to 1500 shots per charge - even with menu fiddling. Uploading from the camera is probably the more significant draw on the battery. Give it a few recharge cycles and see if the battery performance settles in.

Do you have a second battery with which you can compare the charge time? If there is a problem, maybe it is the charger rather than the battery.

I was just looking on the Nikon USA web site and it says the following about the MH-25 charger made for D7000 EN-EL15 batteries:

It can fully charge the EN-EL15 Li-ion battery in approximately 155 minutes.

Perhaps your experience isn't too far off the mark!

That would make sense except for the 53% starting condition.

I've never timed mine. I do not plug it in where I can keep an eye on the blinking light.

True. But seeing that a charge takes 155 minutes tells us that it isn't a "fast" charger (such as a power tool charger as mentioned by the OP).

The EN EL 14 battery is for the Coolpix P7000, D3100 and D5100, not the D7000, which uses the EN-EL 15 battery.

Right about it being the EN EL 15. Who can remember all those numbers.

From what you quoted on the Nikon support site, I guess everything I noted was normal.
