"D7000 Raw Images In Aperture"

Toronto, CA

Hi All - I'm new to Nikonians and just picked up a D7000 and love it so far.

Im upgrading from a D200 and shoot in RAW and I was surprised to find out from Aperture forumes that D7000 RAW files are not yet supported.

Am I missing something?

Any ideas when the D7000 RAW support will be available for Aperture 3?

In the meantime, I have found Raw Photo Processor Shareware software that looks pretty handy - haven't had much chance to tinker with it.

View NX 2 seems to work too
But a NEF Codec for Mac OS X / Aperture would be splendid.

Look forward to being part of the D7000 forum and hearing to your thoughts,
M

It's up to Apple. They'll have to release a raw profile update for the D7000 in OS X. They will surely do so, but who knows when? The most recent update was in August.

Unless you have a good reason not to, use the ViewNX version that came with the camera. It produces better conversions than any of the 3rd party software right now. Later on they will get tweaked possibly. Nikon apparently has some tricks going on with the D7000 files that only their software reads and responds as intended. Adobe got pretty good with conversion in their ACR for other models but the D7000 is doing something different, resulting in lower noise and higher detail than the 3rd party programs. You can use ViewNX to convert to 16 bit TIFF file that can be edited on any software you like, including older copies of Aperture.

You can also configure Nikon ViewNX2 to directly transfer the processed NEF file to Aperture along with all of the in camera settings being applied to the image.

Note that once Aperture is updated to support the NEF format for the D7000, the in camera settings will not be applied the NEF. This is standard practice in all 3rd party software products. Adobe has 'Camera Profiles' but this just applies some predefined settings and ignores the camera's settings.

Nikon just released the update for Nikon CaptureNX2 just before the D7000 shipped. Adobe has not updated the public release for their ACR plugin yet.
