Quick question. What is the purpose of using a half press of the shutter button to lock exposure? If I have my AE-L AF-L button set to AF-ON and I mainly shoot in manual mode, does being able to lock the exposure with a half press of the shutter button give me any advantages?
Does any form of exposure lock become redundant in manual mode or am I missing a trick?

Hi, I also have my AE-L/AF-L button set to AF-ON and I mainly shoot in A mode. However, I found that a half-press of the shutter button in any non-scene mode (M, A, S, P), the green focus dot in the bottom left of the view finder comes on. So, it looks like there is some redundancy in focus lock between the shutter button and the AE-L/AF-L button. I'll be interested to see other comments from some more experienced photographers.
