Hi. I've used the previous versions a few times and I'm not particularly blown out of the water by its capability. I was hoping for a little NCIS (TV show) magic. I'm going to try to send a pic to demonstrate the default treatment that FM performed.

How does one send NEF files or do I need to do that?

Thanks for posting. FocusMagic really has two applications. It can either recover an over blurred image so that something can be done with it, or it can take a sharp image and make it astonishing.

If you pick an image which is already good, and run it through Focus Magic, the results become quite riveting.

I don't consider these to have been improved very much. They were not much blurrier that what you see here and that is why I question the usefulness of the program. Send me an example of yours, blurry and corrected to allow me to compare to see if I can duplicate. Also send the custom correction values if they aren't default.

Thanks.

What I really wanted you to do was to take my images and see if you can make them acceptable.

For both photos, the detected blur width floats 2-4 pixels depending on the selected area of the photos. Setting both to 3 works quite well as does 4 for the second picture.

2 pixels at 100% usually works well for my D200 and D700. If you are using something noticeably higher in resolution, you might need to bump up the pixel count.

I ran one of your pictures through Focus Magic a couple of times. It's not ideal starting from an image which has already had FM applied once, but this is what I got:

First pass on 3, second pass on 2

Some parts of the image were already sharp — just not the face. When FM finds something which is already sharp, the result is akin to unsharp masking — i.e., it isn't refocussed, just highlighted with a line. This may sometimes be ok, but I used the history brush to remove it because it just throws the difference of focus into sharper relief.

It works on Elements 12. It doesn't work on Lightroom.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't — as far as I remember Aperture does not accept Photoshop plugins.

Well, as we can see running it through FM twice did sharpen the result better.

What happened here was that someone else took the photo (not me of course!) and the AF was single point and caught the background cabinet. Should have given the camera to the photographer with the AF-area mode selected or left it on total auto matrix.
