I just bought a Nikon D800. I installed the version of NikonView that came with the camera. I use that program to import the photos from the camera. When I use Photoshop (CS), I can see the new photos in the File Browser, but they will not open (I get a pop-up saying that the document type is not valid). I can see that the files are .NEF format. With my previous camera (Nikon D70) these RAW files would open fine with Photoshop (I think it used Camera Raw to open them). Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks !

I don't think photoshop cs got the camera raw update for the D800. You will need to update your photoshop or download the separate DNG converter and convert you nef files to DNG files.

Thank you !! I will give that a try. You are probably correct -- my Photoshop CS isn't current for the D800. CS worked okay with the RAW files from my (older) D70 camera -- but not the new D800. -- John

If you really mean Photoshop CS, and not CS5 or CS6, then I can assure you that it does not and will not ever handle a D800 NEF file. CS was introduced in 2003 and withdrawn in 2005. It is my impression that it will not support any NEF formats introduced after 2005, and clearly the D800 is in this category.

Your choices are as follows:

- upgrade to CS6, whose ACR does support the D800. (Note that this is much less expensive now than it will be January 1, 2013.)

- adopt a workflow that converts the NEFs to DNG (or other) format that CS recognizes, and then use your old software to edit that format.

Thanks for your answer, blw -- you are exactly right ! I snagged the Adobe .DNG converter, and now able to view / edit the images in Photoshop (yes, it is CS). Thanks again !!
