Hello, I'm hoping someone can offer a quick fix for this problem: I updated from LR3 to LR4. I also upgraded my windows from Win XP to WIN 7 with 64 bit ability. I have backups of everything including my catalog, my photos, etc.. But now, ALL my folders in LR4 are showing on the left side in Library with question marks and I am FORCED to browse to the folder to make Lightroom find the "missing folders" - I'm having to do this FOR ALL folders, some 8,000 photos with about 60 folders. I've only done this so far for about 4 folders and thought to ask this question here. I have three external hard drives that I use and prior to this LR3 to LR4 conversion, my folders and catalog worked perfectly, my folders on G, H, and I drives were there and not missing. Any ideas? Thank you, Debra
Did you have LR3 working on the new system before updating to LR4? If so, the conversion should have kept the connection to your images. You might want to see if a drive letter has been reassigned or something. Understanding what happened would help ensure that nothing else is a problem.
By pointing Lightroom to the parent folder of the missing files will typically allow it find all subfolders. Is this possible or are all the folders spread around?
Thanks Brian, when I bought LR4, I was still running Win XP. So I had to upgrade to Win 7, which I did, and I went to 64 bit since my PC was capable; (this involved a complete and clean install(had to reinstall programs, etc., after properly backing up my data of course). I have not reinstalled LR3, I did not think I would need to. I was counting on all my backups and catalog backups to work with LR4 since I paid for the upgrade and had it on disk.
Boy was I wrong. I am continuing to manually point (browse) to all my folders on all my external HDDs to get my folders "found".
This has been a most painful and frustrating experience. For someone who exercises good backup practices and computer maintenance and proper file naming and such, for this to happen, it is unforgiveable to adobe for this bug, whatever it is.
Thanks Tom, and yes, I did allow LR to convert my LR3 catalog to LR4.
I have completed the task of manually pointing by browsing to all of my folders, in LR4, took about 4 hours. What a task. And I don't even know why this happened, I only know that all my folders were in the same places, same names, same paths, and LR4 did not see them for some reason, could be related to my upgrade from 32 bit Windows XP to 64 bit Win 7(required to use LR4), don't know.
Debra, My wife has also upgraded from win XP to Win7. She has had trouble with the file structure in Win7. The way it treats the old shared folders can create problems. She has had more trouble converting to Win7 from XP than I did going to MAC OSX. Maybe the trouble you had was not Lightroom but Win7
Merv, I agree, I think that my problems with my folders being lost after I upgraded from Win XP 32 bit to Win 7 at 64 bit, was the WIn 7 conversion. I do have my folders back, after I manually browsed to each and every one of them, it took about four hours. Sigh.
