After I shoot in RAW, I am unable to open my RAW (NEF) files in either Adobe PS CS 5.1 or LR 4 without first converting to JPEG. (I am able to convert the NEF files to TIFF of JPEG by using Nikon's View NX2, the software that came with the camera--Nikon D600.)

My questions is this: what is the point of shooting in RAW if I can't open the RAW files directly in PS or LR? Isn't all that extra data in the RAW file lost when it is converted to JPEG? While I can manipulate the RAW file in View NX2 to some degree, the editing capabilities of View NX2 are limited compared to LR.

Thanks in advance for your advice.
