My wife and i were in the syosset store 2 weeks ago and ended up buying both a d800 and a d7000 . It was quite a day for us ,ha ha ha.
Anyway i have a manfrotto o55xprob tripod and a 685b monopod.
I need to get a better head for the tripod. I find the screw that holds the plate to the
Camera keeps loosening and is quite a pain. I have a 486rc2 which is to light for the d800 and the 70-200mm vrii.
So first question is , i was going to get a 498rc2 but are there better mounting plates?
Or is their a better choice for a head and quick release system?
For the monopod i don't really need a head but i would like a quick release plate.
I would prefer they both match.
We may stop in to the store tomorrow.

That is the problem with ball heads with 1/4"-20 screws and propriatary Quick Release systems including All of the Manfrotto Q/R systems.
The Arca-Swiss Q/R system eliminates the problem completely.
Ball heads made my Markins, Arca-Swiss, RRS, Kirk, and a few others include Arca-Swiss Compatible Clamps.
You will need a A/S custom plate or L-Bracket for each camera body and an A/S replacement foot or plate for each lens with a foot.
The Plates, L-Brackets, and replacement feet are made by RRS, Kirk, and Wimberley.
While the initial cost of entry is costly, once you convert the the A/S Q/R system you will never go back.
