How can I force the flash on my Nikon d5300? I want to use it for fill sometimes.

Hi Ron,

Welcome to Nikonians!
In P,S,A, or M or Auto exposure modes simply press the flash mode button next to the prism to open the flash and fire away.

To expand a bit on Marty's post, if you are in one of the scene modes or in the green "auto" mode, you have given the flash decision over to the camera.
