not experienced this before i have noticed that turning off the vr it doesn't do this, has anyone got any ideas why this is happening or any ways to cure it. or do i need to take it back to where i purchased it from and demand a new one.

>i have noticed that turning off the vr it doesn't do this

What you probably are hearing is the lens' VR system shutting down and returning to its resting state. There will be a softer "clunk" when it start up.

Yes, it is normal. It happens with all VR lenses. The bigger lenses might be louder.

I had similar fears when I got my first DSLR with VR lens . . . there's a lot of stuff going on compared to my old 35mm film camera.

(I do miss the sound of my motor-drive, it sounded really pro)

I agree with you, that "clunk" does sound a bit final, like something just broke inside . . . don't worry, you're good.

So much for silent motor drive. No noise just thunk!

Oddly, my 70-300 is much quieter, but you can both hear it while it's running, and you can feel it rather than hear it when the VR gets switched off.

The 18-55 VR is the second noisiest clunk I own, but by far and above the loudest clunks come from the 55-200 VR (I have had two samples, and they both did it). Each lens makes its own noises, however, and of the four VR lenses I own and three others I've borrowed, yes, generally, the larger the VR element (and lens) the louder the clunk.
