Autofocus with Sigma 24mm - 70mm on D5000
I was able to borrow a friend's 24-70mm sigma lens as I was thinking about buying one. However I can't seem to be able to auto focus - the option is greyed out on the menu screen and manual focus only.
Does anyone have any thoughts, no doubt I am doing something stupid!
many thanks in advance

There are two choices here: Either there's a switch on the lens that's set to manual focus, or this version of the lens is a non-HSM, and so won't autofocus without using a focus motor in the camera body that your D5000 lacks.

ahhh! well now, that sounds right!
I own a Sigma 10-20mm, and when I checked the side it is DC - HSM
and when I checked the borrowed 24-70mm it is EX DG
So looks like I need to try and find a 24-70mm with HSM - will have to research to see if that exisist, and hopefully second hand
many thanks for the help!

Welcome to Nikonians!
The current version of the 24-70mm f/2.8 IF DG HSM will work on your D5000. Since you are using a DX body, you might want to consider the Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G ED IF AF-S or the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC (os) HSM. I found the 17-55mm a much more useful range on a DX body than the 17-35mm, 28-70mm or 24-70mm f/2.8 Nikkors combined.
