"d3200 live view "

US

With my new D3200 I've noticed that when I'm making a shot in LV mode the Total Shuts Count increments by 2. Doing the same using the view finder it increments by 1 as it supposed to. Is there any explanation? I am using Opanda EXIF reader to find the total shut count.
Thanks.

Your camera is fine. Even the D800 and the newest Df increment by 2 when in LiveView.

So, is it a firmware bug or the shutter actually makes 2 cycles per shot?

It's not a firmware problem. The shutter actually takes two cycles during Liveview.

First. During Liveview viewing, the shutter is open to allow light to hit the sensor and create your Liveview preview.

Second. When you take the photo the shutter must close and the sensor wiped clean to allow a photo to be taken.

Third. The shutter now opens and closes and a photo is taken and saved.

Fourth. After the photo is taken and saved the shutter now opens again to allow preview during LiveView so you can take the next photo.

That's opening the shutter twice and closing the shutter twice for each photo. Two actuations per photo.

Thanks Len!
This means the shutter mechanism wears down twice faster if one uses the LV mode instead of the Viewfinder. Take notice, guys!

Dumb question alert!

The only way you can shoot movie clips is by live view. Does what you just said, apply taking movies as well, or only Pictures.

The "shutter count" is incremented for movies, too. It gets incremented any time the sensor is exposed: still pictures, movies, live view, cleaning, etc.

Yes, as Joseph pointed out. However. taking an uninterrupted movie clip only, regardless of the size, only increments the shutter count by 1. And that count is because you opened and closed Liveview just once.
