"Nikon D3100 lens for street photography."

US

Hello i'm very new to photography and recently decided to get a DSLR to begin with. I know for sure i want the D3100 to start from scratch with but i dont know what sort of lens to get. Do i go with the standard 18-55nm VR Lens or what compatible lens would you recommend for a rookie photographer looking to take lots of street photos (of people lights apartments downtown) and sometimes in the rainy or cloudy evenings?

thank you!

Hi Rashid,

Welcome to Nikonians!
I would recommend getting the D3100 with the kit 18-55mm VR.
First when you buy the kit, you get a substantial discount on the lens.
The kit 18-55mm VR is optically excellent and works very well for general photography.
Once you get some experience and develop your shooting style you will have a better idea what lens will work best for your particular requirements.

Best Regards,
Marty

I have the D3100 with the 18-55 mm kit lens, and I agree with this advice. It is a good lens and very versatile. Start with it, and use it for a while. You will begin to see what you want to do, that you can't do with that lens--macro, longer telephoto, whatever. Then it is time to get the next lens that fits your needs.

Here are a couple of Sample photos I've taken with the 18-55 on a D3200

My Mother 89 yrs young

Planter of some Mum (Fall Roses)

Bearded Irises
This taken some time ago with a D3000 using same type 18-55 lens.

You can actually do some neat tricks with it. For example In Picture on my Mother I set the aperture so That I focused at Particular spot so that it made the rest the scene out of focus which is what I intended.

I recently picked up a refurbished 18-105VR and find it a step up from the 18-55 kit lens...better range for a walk around lens, and bright, sharp results due to larger diameter. Nice lens shade included as well which is not included with the 18-55 kit lens...a nice feature for daytime shooting.

Thank you all very much! i think i'll either go with the 18-55 or 18-105 lens depending on how different the sharpness & clarity are.

>& clarity are.

Both the 18-55mm VR and the 18-105mm VR have for all practical purposes the same sharpness and contrast.
The biggest difference between the two lenses is the 18-105mm has a longer zoom range.
You can't go wrong with either one.

Best Regards,
Marty
