"D5000 video problem"

I have a used 5000 that seems to function normally except for video. As the instructions say, I put it in Live View, hit focus and then press the OK button. Nada. I've tried everything I can think of but the little REC icon has a line crossed through it. I haven't found anything on the Web that addresses this. Am I missing something?

Are you pressing the shutter release button half way or all the way to focus?

Is the battery fully charged?

Enough Light?
did you set Aperture open enough for the light?
Have you checked the menu settings for the Video?

AF does not operate during filming with the d5000. You have to adjust focus manually during filming.

Thanks for your suggestions. It's possible I'm too stupid to make video work, but I'm pretty sure there's something wrong with the camera.

Are you even sure that the 5000 Model even has video.
I had a D3000 and even though it claimed having video technically I was stop-action movie which is different.

On my D3200 To do video here are the steps:

push button for live view
push push down the button with the little red dot.
then push down shutter button and hold down until you finish movie
then release shutter
Press button with red dot again
push LV button to turn off Live view.

You want to use live view as little as possible It eats batteries like there is no tomorrow. On my camera if you leave Live view own ten minute it will reduce the battery charge almost by half

Yes! The D5000 has video capability.

The D3000 as you know does not have video capability.

Marty

Thanks for responding. I've tried all the buttons and come to the conclusion that while d5000s have video mine is an exception. Something is broke.

Yes I knew after the fact, D3000 didn't have video. Because it was advertised as having stop action video. Which is not really video.
