In the M setting AI/AIS lenses can be used on the D5200/D5100 (without metering). The electronic rangefinder can be used in this mode (if max. lens aperture <= 5.6). Is the electronic rangefinder information also available on the screen so I can use the screen for focusing?

When shooting in this mode can I see the histogram on the screen as an overlay on the picture just taken?

Yes. Just select RGB histogram in the Playback display options in the Playback Menu. You will see 4 histograms, R, G, B and combined by scrolling down when viewing the image on the LCD screen.

The rangefinder dot is also visible when you reach focus.

Thank you for this information. Then I have no excuse for not buying the camera I guess.

It will be interesting to see the d5200 24MP sensor compared with the d3200. I hope it just shows a little better figues. Nikon claims that it should be "better". Less noise and better dynamic range.
