What is a reasonably priced 18 mm wide angle lens that works well with the D5100.

Literally 18mm? How about the 18-55 VR? Doesn't it come with the 5100 by default?

Pick the Nikkor 12-24mm f/4G ED-IF AF-S DX and you won't have any regrets. This is the best wide-angle zoom lens for the D5100, bar none!

Do you mean a prime lens (fixed focal length) or a zoom lens?

If you mean zoom lens, as Brian indicated, the kit one should suffice.

If it's a prime you are looking for, you have the:

AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G which is about $200 new

Anything much shorter focal length starts to get expensive, specially if you want it to auto focus on the D5100. By more expensive I mean $500++

What's your budget?

You ask about an 18mm lens; on a DX format sensor, 18mm is not very wide, having the approximate equivalent angle of view of a 28mm lens as an FX format (film sized) sensor. In that case, the "kit" lens of 18-55 would be fine.

(Note: Nikon's 18mm lens has a diagonal angle of view of 100 degrees on FX/film bodies and diagonal angle of view of 76 degrees on DX bodies; the 28mm lens in FX/film has a diagonal angle of view of 74 degrees.)

If you are asking about a lens with an angle of view similar to an 18mm lens in FX (or film), then you are looking at a lens like a 10/12 -24mm zoom. Nikon, Sigma, Tokina make great 12-24mm lenses; I think the 10-24mm lenses (more recent versions)

The 18-55mm kit lens is optically excellent and the price is very reasonable. Since both versions of the 18-55mm have AF motors built into the lens they are fully supported by the D5100.

I recently bought my D5100 and it came with the stock 18-55mm
lens.  I thought I'd want to get a *better* lens, but after
checking it out, I was very impressed with the 18-55mm.  I am
an amateur who has been tinkering with photography for the
better part of the last 40 years.  I am not an expert, but I
know what I like.  The combination of the 18-55mm with the
D5100 allows me to take a wide range of pictures indoors and
outside that are clear and sharp.  I was going to replace it
with a 35mm fixed lens, but I personally could not tell any
significant difference between the two lenses.

I have the same lens and use it most of the time. I would like wider though! Anyway I also have the fixed 35 and do like it as well. I find I tend to find more useful positions I may not have looked for if I had the 18-55 on. I know it's a matter of being a bit lazy, zoom in get a good picture but with the 35 I have to move and find in many cases I am not in the same position I would have been because in many cases I can't just walk forward but also have to side step and even adjust my height in some cases. Things I hope become second nature with the 18-55 eventually!
