"D3100 Rookie -- Battery Help"

US

I am a total rookie at DSLR's but just bought a D3100 for a crazy cheap deal. I am trying to find another battery for it and I'm noticing that the batteries I'm finding online are $50 - $80.

I'm confused because, from what I can find, the camera uses the EN EL14 battery. A lot of websites advertise the EN-EL14 battery but they say specifically it will not work with the D3100.

Any ideas?

I am just irritated to think that batteries are that expensive for this camera. My neighbor just bought a new Canon T3i and he's finding batteries in the $20 range.

Thanks!

Congrats on your D3100. It is really a nice camera.

Here is a link to the Nikon site and I think that Best Buy will match their price. Also, most BB stores have them in stock.

It is well worth the money---those batteries last a LONG time. You won't need more than 2 to get through a whole day, unless you are using flash in every shot, or shooting a lot of video.

Can someone explain why this battery on ebay will NOT work in the D3100??? I've very confused. Are there different EN-EL14 batteries. On the link supplied above it shows that battery working for both the P7000 and D3100. Thanks!!

Nikon "chips" their most recent batteries which is read by the camera. A 3rd party generic or counterfeit battery, which is what the battery in the link probably is, will give you an error message and be unusable in your camera. These batteries also will not work in the P7000 Coolpix if it has the latest firmware installed.

Look at where the battery is being sold from and the very low price. Think about it.

I don't trust eBay for anything. IF I am going to buy over the Internet, I am going to go with Amazon. (and stay away from the used stuff) odds are if it's real cheap if probably been used 2-3 years.

Hi Brian,

The internet marketplace is flooded with counterfeit merchandise.
Given the difference in price, it would be a safe bet that the battery is counterfeit.
As always: Buyer Be Ware!
Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty
