"Nothing happens when I try to charge my battery in charger"

I have the d5000 camera and went to charge my battery upon discovering my camera is dead. However, when I plugged in my battery charger and inserted the battery, nothing happened. The light didn't come on no matter how many different outlets I tried plugging it into. I don't know whether the problem has to do with my battery or the charger itself? I've never had an issue until now. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! It's hard to know whether I may need a new charger or a new battery when I don't know which has the issue.

Without a second battery or charger I don't think you'll be able to tell.

Hi Leah,

Welcome to Nikonians!
Sorry to hear of your problem.
Do you know anyone that has a D40, D40X, D60, D3000, or D5000, that you can try charging your battery in their charger? You could also try charging their battery in your charger to see if it works.
Good luck and Enjoy your Nikons!

Best Regards,
Marty

Yeah kinda sucks, but the two gentleman above me are correct. Just take it to your nearest camera store. Im sure theyll test it out for you for free. A new charger is around $45.00 and a battery will be around $43.00.

With a multimeter you could check the continuity of the electric cord. If you have a spare cord that fits the charger, you can test to see if your cord is bad.

If the cord is good, then you need a new charger. There are no user servicable parts within the charger.
