"In-Camera Sharpening For D3100?"

A friend of mine is just getting started in the DSLR world. She will do no PP. I have noticed that her pics, mainly of her children, are too soft. I do not know anything about a D3100 and would appreciate some thoughts are to what she should use for in-camera sharpening. Her main lens is the Nikkor 55-200 VR.

In the Picture Control setting she has selected in-camera, she can specify levels/aggressiveness of the Sharpening - on a scale from 0 (none) all the way to 9. I would not advise 9 - she should try 3-4 and adjust to taste.

You might also want to look at the EXIF data on some of her pictures to make sure that she is using a fast enough shutter speed and is stopped down from wide open. Also, what focus mode she is using. I have a D3100, and find that the jpegs are just fine without any in-camera sharpening.

She has the camera set-up on auto. That may be the problem.
