Trying to help out a friend; When you turn on the D5000 it has a white message across the rear screen with red letters "AUTO EXPOSURE ERROR CONTACT A NIKON AUTHORIZED SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE". With the price of repairs, I don't know that is a good idea for a D5000. Any thoughts?

You could try resetting the camera and removing the battery for 48 hours and see if that corrects the problem. If not send it to a Nikon Authorized Repair Station. They will give you an estimate and wait for authorization before proceeding with the repair. You can then determine if it is more economical to repair the camera or replace it. Good Luck and Enjoy your Nikons!
