"Nikon D5100 Aperture issue"

US

Hi All,

I read dpreview.com saying that the D5100's Live View aperture control has a bug. When you enter in live view , the changed aperture will not taken into consideration even though it shows on the live view. That means it takes photo with old aperture value. They say this is same bug as in D300.

Does anybody know every D5100 faces the same problem?. Is the new firmware 1.0.1 resolves this issues ?

Thanks

Actually your interpretation of what is happening is incorrect.

When you are in live view mode the viewing aperture will stay at that aperture before you take the photo even if you change the aperture. This is true. When live view is on the aperture will stay the same until you take the photo with a new aperture setting. At that time the aperture will change to the new setting and the photo will be taken with the new aperture setting. This has not changed with the new firmware.

Re-read the review and the last sentence in the paragraph where they mention the quirk. This is what they say.

"It will honour the set aperture when actually making an exposure, and indeed return to live view at that aperture afterwards...."

I have verified that this is what actually happens on my D5100.

Hi nivas,

Your question has me looking into the liveview conditions while viewing and also when taking the photo with my other cameras. My cameras with liveview are the D5100, D300, D700 and the D3x. I find the D5100, D300/D700 and the D3x all operate differently.

The D3x appears to be the most complicated. The viewing aperture is not the same as the taking aperture. It actually is constantly opening and closing as the light intensity of the scene changes. It then stops down to the aperture chosen for taking the photo.

The D300 and D700 are the same. Liveview chooses some aperture during viewing which is not the same as the taking aperture. After the exposure the aperture reverts back to the viewing aperture and not the taking aperture.

The D5100 viewing aperture is the same as what was used in the previous photo or before liveview was turned on.

It's my opinion that the way the D5100 operates is not a quirk or a bug but the way the camera was designed given the design constraints of the low cost body.

Hi Leonard62,

Thanks for your valuable information. Have you used D5100 ?. I am trying to get some details before jumping on to this camera.

Basically all I understand is that the aperture will not change if we enter "A" live mode. We have to come out of live view to get the latest aperture changes. I am not sure how this is in D3100 and D7000.

Thanks

Yes I use the D5100 all the time and have taken movies with it in liveview. I always use all my cameras in "A" mode. It's a nice little camera and been very reliable.

The aperture changes when you take the photo and then stays at the new aperture until you take the next photo. It does not change when you are just looking at the monitor. That's exactly the way the other 3 cameras work that I have mentioned. And they are all much more expensive then the D5100. Why is this a problem for you?

edit: Don't think that because DPreview says that something is a problem that it is. I stopped reading their reviews ever since we found out that they have used reviewers that are biased toward Canon cameras which they are familiar with. They even admitted that they are not familiar with Nikon and if a feature is not exactly the way it is implemented on the Canon that it is a fault. I don't know if this is the same reviewer but for me DPreview has become irrelevant. As have other reviewers.

The bottom line is that the D5100 takes perfect photos at the aperture you tell it to and how they get there should not be a concern.

Hi Leonard62,

Thanks for your quick reply. Just one more question. Which one of the below lens are good for D5100.
1)Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR
2)Nikon 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR AF-S DX Nikkor Zoom Lens

Thanks

Hi. Both lenses should be fine on the D5100. But before you get into the telephoto zoom lenses you should determine what kind of photos you want to take. As a first choice I would get the 18-55mm or the 18-105mm. They are more suited for every day family photos, landscape and also portraits at the longer end. The telephoto lenses would be more suited to outdoor sports, wildlife and zoo photography and less useful indoors. I don't own either of these lenses so I can't comment on picture quality. I did have the 18-55mm AFS VR lens and found it to be extremely good given it's low price. It was part of a D60 kit which I traded for the D5100 so I don't have it anymore.

Can't speak for the OP, but it seems to me that the problem with this is that Live View is not WYSIWYG. You can't rely on it as a quick visual check on exposure. Of course you can work around that constraint, but its a constraint.

Hello there,
I think you can reflect aperture or shutter changes on Live View if you simply off Live View and on again before taking a picture.

Yep, that's one of the workarounds I was referring to. It would be a cumbersome thing to have to a lot; in certain circumstances, you'd probably miss some shots (sports or any event involving one of my wild children). I just stick with the viewfinder, which is another other workaround.
